It sounds like it was recorded one gin-fuelled morning in a shoebox held together by Sellotape, but The Victorian English Gentlemen's Club's wilfully amateurish playing and lo-fi indie persuasions reward with each listen.

Recalling Elastica or The Breeders without the smack apathy, this artrock trio's absurdist lyrics and discordant clashes against melody work best when bassist Louise Mason and drummer Emma Daman engage in battle for the mic against lead vocalist Adam Taylor.
Their trademark vocal spats form the best parts of the band's erratic debut, best realised on the speed-pop gems My Son Spells Backwards and Amateur Man, along with the closing Cannonball, which sounds something like Sparks after three weeks spent incarcerated with Mark E Smith.
