GonorrhoeaA does of the clap won't get you a round of applause

A dose of the clap isn't gonna get you a round of applause - more like sterility, arthritis and heart problems!
What do you mean?

Like Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea is an infection that is on the increase amongst young people. It can lead to serious complications. For a lass it can lead to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) which may cause ectopic pregnancy, premature labour and still birth.

But that doesn't mean that lads are off the hook. It can infect the eye, throat and rectum of both sexes. If you've got other STIs though, the chances are you won't even spot the signs.

What are the signs?

Lads - watch out for peeing more often, with maybe a burning feeling and green/yellow discharge from your penis.

Girls - you may also notice a discharge, peeing more often, pain during sex, irregular bleeding and pelvic or low stomach pain.

Sounds nice huh?! And how could you get it?

It's caught through any kind of unprotected sex; straight, oral or anal with an infected partner. Even genital contact with someone who's infected can put you at risk. You've an increased chance of getting it if you sleep around or if your partner's sleeping around, if you don't use a rubber or if you keep catching STIs.

Chances are you'll notice if you've been infected within 2 weeks of catching it.

So how are you gonna protect yourself?

Don't have sex until you've finished treatment. Make sure you tell any partners if you're infected and use a rubber every time (that goes for lasses as well as lads!)
