1999: Ban lifted on gay people in military
BBC News reports on the result of the case taken to the European Court of Human Rights by four military personnel who were sacked for being gay.
A survey by National Opinion Polls during the same month suggested that although seven out of ten Britons believed lesbians and gay men should be allowed to serve in the armed forces, fewer men backed the change than women and there was a marginal majority in favour of keeping the status quo among the over-65s.
