This Newsreel item shows Ramsgate lit up by 30,000 lights and Battersea funfair glowing in the dark to honour the Festival of Britain and provide an extra special welcome to Bank Holiday-makers. All along the seafront, the funfair and the gardens, lights and fireworks are enjoyed by holidaymakers who have come from all around to enjoy the Festival of Britain celebrations.

The Festival of Britain marked the centenary of the Great Exhibition of 1851 with various displays and shows throughout the country to celebrate British culture. It was also a way to boost morale after World War Two. The South Bank exhibition in London attracted more than eight million visitors.
