In this extract from a longer programme, presenter Stuart MacPherson remembers the London Games of 1948 with the help of Olympic librarian Sandy Duncan.
Facilities were rudimentary, competitors were billeted in schools and campsites around London and, because rationing was still in place, guest countries supplemented the athletes' dietary needs with generous donations.
The star of the Games was undoubtedly Dutch athlete Fanny Blankers-Koen, who reflects on winning four gold medals despite being written off as 'too old' at 30.
