This mute footage is included in the collection for its 'ahhh' factor. It features some very solemn little girls in fantastic home-made hats taking part in an Easter bonnet competition. This is followed by footage of a large number of boys taking part in the annual Easter Monday walking race in Steyning, a picture-book pretty village in Sussex.
Elsie and Doris Waters, the two glamorous ladies holding the finishing-line tape in this news item, were long-time Steyning residents but were better known as 'Gert and Daisy', a popular comedy double act who entertained troops during the war and featured prominently on several radio shows. Norman Read (also a Steyning resident), who starts the race, was an Olympic gold medallist who won the 50 km road-walking race in 1956.
