The British Medical Association was sometimes less than enthusiastic about the new health service, and claimed that doctors were worse off in 1957 than in 1951.
In this statement John Pringle, the BMA's press officer, announces that GPs are being advised to resign from the NHS and return to private practice. A Royal Commission was set up to look into the matter of pay and in November 1957 the BMA agreed to submit to it.
