1989: Michael Knighton in deal to buy Man United

Newsnight reports in August 1989 on the proposed £20m sale of Manchester United in the biggest takeover in British football history.

The prospective owner was Isle of Man-based property tycoon and former footballer Michael Knighton.

The deal later collapsed after Mr Knighton’s financial backers pulled out. He went on to buy Carlisle United instead.
