A History of the World: This paddle and bail were a gift to Pamela’s husband from Vietnamese boat people he rescued.
Pamela Whalley
Pamela's husband was a volunteer on an 'illegal immigrants patrol' in the South China seas in 1979. The patrol came across two san pan boats, which looked on radar like driftwood. There were twelve peole on the boats, four of them dead, the rest starving. He helped a young Vietnamese girl by covering her with his sweater. In return she gave him this paddle and bail which had been used on the boats to flee from Vietnam to Hong Kong.
