Jean-Vernon looks at a photograph of a young women he knew briefly early in the 1930s. He was a teenager when he met the older, rather glamorous foreign student, and had his first sexual experience with her. They used to drive her out into the country to make love. Years later he came across her singing in a nightclub and wondered whether or not to approach her, but decided not to. Extraordinary, how passionately you can feel at one point in your life, and how completely the feelings can fade.
