I WAS THERE By Paula Richards "It was alright to have nothing, if everyone else had nothing too." Paula introduces her own story looking back to 1984 when her parents were striking miners. Her mother was part of the women's group who helped raise funds and her father was generally at the front line of any picketing. For Paula the feeling of being part of something bigger, meeting people from all over the world, surviving on very little and using her imagination was an amazing time for her as a 12 year old. From this experience Paula developed an ingrained sense of community, which has been unmatched since. Paula says "I had an incredible sense of belonging and have a lot of fond memories which has taught me valuable lessons in life. My parents were totally committed to the cause which probably coloured my view".
