Hawson visits Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland. What amazes him is the amount of ivy - he's never seen so much in his life. It's rampant these days. It never used to be a problem because when farmers cut their hedges by hand they'd trim the ivy at the same time. With tractors, they don't seem to bother.
