INDEPENDENCE By Abdel Adam Abdel is an asylum seeker from Sudan. Today he and some fellow Sudanese refugees are having a party to celebrate Sudanese Independence Day. It is good to be among friends in the same situation. There's no segregation here, no political differences. They enjoy singing national songs, eating national food and chatting.

Your thoughts about this video

| Kate It was very touching Em Abdel, your thoughts about you and your friends futures were very touching. I really hope your wishes come true. It doesn't matter where we live or where we come from, I think what is most important is that we all care for each other like a mother for her dearest child. Where would our problems be then?!
Sean Flanagan I enjoyed watching Abdel's video and wish there was no discrimination or prejudice of any kind in the world. Pete Touching as it is to see individual cases of hardship in other countries, the fact is, and this is not a racist view, that this country is barely able to cope with the people already here. We have the most congested roads in Europe, almost no public transport at a local level, a laughable national railway system, overcrowded schools, hospitals and social services, housing shortages that will lead to massive [unwanted by locals] development of what remains of the green areas of the countryside, a simmering anti - muslim attitude amongst many, and a Government that seems hell bent on getting this country into wars around the globe.
Against this background, how can we look to take in 100,000's of mainly non english speaking, semi or non skilled people, many with health or nutritional problems that will require a draw down of scant resources, without generating resentment and ill-will amongst those who have lived here for generations? The fact is the UK can't become the 'sink estate' of Europe - the load has to be shared out evenly with our EU partners. |
