Mabel watches the seagulls fly round her top-floor window in Whitby. When she was younger you never saw them on land - they must be different birds now. In the old days the gulls would gather round the trawlers when the men were gutting the fish. But the fishing industry has gone, and the gulls now scavenge the town's streets.
