LOVE LETTERS By Angela Clare Angela is a researcher at The Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds. It has a collection of love letters in its Archives sent between a husband and wife during the First World War. Angela became captivated by the tale of the letters written by Jack Adam and his wife Gert. Jack joined the 12th Battalion of the London Regiment in March 1915. Within two or three days he was promoted to corporal owing to his background as a PT teacher and in May 1915 he was made sergeant. When he first went away his letters were full of hope and optimism and Gert was grateful that she has his letters to help her through those dark days. But Jack's letters became more serious and eventually stopped altogether and Gert was full of despair over what might have happened to him.
