BEFORE THE BRIDGE By Tim Ryan The River Severn Ferries have carved their place in history with all who used them. Millions used to flock to the tiny jetties at Aust and Beachley, in Gloucestershire, attempting to cut out the hundred or so extra miles they'd have to travel to get to and from Wales and the West Country. For the people who lived nearby many a famous passenger meant a glimpse and, sometimes, the afternoon off school as the stars passed through.

| John Edwards This brought back memories of our regular summer holiday trips in the 40s and 50s from Newport to relatives in Poole. There was always a debate between my parents about "Ferry" or "Drive-round". The kids usually swayed the decision towards the ferry. Our old Austin 10 generally made it on to the first or second ferry. Andrew Smith The year 1963 Aug 27th I had passed my driving test and had bought my "new Car" a Wolsey Hornet 1939 ex Bristol Police Car from a garage in Taunton.
Along with my Army buddy I set out for the land of Song, my home town of Pontypool. We traveled at top speed of around 68 mph up the A38, eventually arriving at Aust to catch the Ferry. I was so in awe of having to drive my car onto this flimsey ramp to access the boat, which incidentally had very low side rails.
We were almost the last to go on board, the crossing was choppy and a little rough, I know we both hung onto the cars roof rails our fingers white from lenching so hard.
Once at Beechly we drove off without incident, and we felt as if we had conquered Everest.
However, we had saved ourselves three hours of travel around Gloucester and down the Valley of Monmouth and Usk, to Pontypool.
The cost I believe was 17/6d (75p) and now we are having to pay £4.50 to come home, how times have changed. julie marsh Thanks for an engaging video,Tim. Yours was the only one I watched and did not need to see more,it drew my full attention and made me watch twice! Captivating! Hope your children love the area as you so obviously do. |
