A golly to me represents something cute and attractive to be treasured and played with, just like a teddy bear or cute "white" doll. Sorry if it represents something different to black people. What do redheads think about Little Gingerbreadman? The cross has a stronger image. I don't wear it because I am not religious but I believe a golly is a doll...why should children (any race) just play with white, ridiculously long legged, big eyed, blond barbie dolls? We should look to the future, kids should learn to play with and live amongst all races/colours/religions. I support people's rights and am against racism. Close friends are mexicans, indians, french, english, dutch, spanish - sorry about your (and my) histories, let's look to the future and let's remember a doll is just a doll, to a child, something cute, cuddly, comforting.

Andrew
The badges do not incite racial hatred and aren't racially motivated... they show a fun character in a variety of positive roles... Policeman, Footballer, Skateboarder, Judge... even a King and Queen... Isn't it time that we stopped looking at every black image and shouted racist? Should all black dolls be withdrawn from sale - should all Welsh, Scottish, Irish, Russian, French etc etc etc be withdrawn from sale?

Eve
How nice to see another golly collector sharing his hobby, well done Phil.

Silly Golly

What a pity. These brooches had nothing racist about them. From an early age I enjoyed them and collected a few, without once thinking they represented black people, and certainly never seeing them in any sort of derogatory light anyway. My reaction when they were withdrawn from the marmalade labels was "what?? racist? How ridiculous!"

Carolyn
The golly was a derogatiry, stereotypical character that ridicules black people. If you don't know so many find it offensive, do some research on the net!

Ali
sad but true.Atishoo.

S
They are a bit wrong, aren't they. They just make me feel a bit bad

Andy
I'm a white guy, and it hurts me so much everytime I see a white toy doll, its racist against white people to see us portrayed in this way (tongue in cheek)

Shaun
People cherish odd items. Jesus was crucified on a cross and the cross is now a sacred symbol for christians. Golly might be a dubious icon but we have to learn from the past, not destroy it.

Chris
I can hardly believe you are supporting this racism. Like many others I boycotted Robinson's products until they got rid of their golly on their jars.

A black woman who feels sad and hurt by this
Didn't we stop all this stuff a long time ago. Destroy the memory don't make it something to treasure.
