Non-league side Spartans took on the Premier League team at home on Monday 5 January 2009 in the third round of the competition. ![]() Ged Dalton scored against Bournemouth Spartans held on bravely until the 58th minute when Villaneuva's strike put Blackburn ahead. To the disappointment of the hundreds of fans inside the ground the Northumberland team could not drum up an equaliser, despite a late chance for substitute Andrew Wright. The Spartans' players had been hoping to repeat the glories of the 1977-78 season when the club reached the fifth round of the FA Cup. That time the cup run was ended by Wrexham in a memorable replay at a packed St James' Park.
