Weeing is normal, pooing is not normal. So weeing, the baby actually will swallow all of the water that is produced by the mum progressively throughout the pregnancy and as the baby swallows this it will wee it all back out and that’s what the amniotic fluid is made out of. Amniotic fluid is the water that surrounds the baby inside the womb and initially up until 20 weeks of pregnancy, it’s mainly made up of water that is produced from the maternal body from the mum’s body.

With pooing we don’t know when the baby has pooed until your waters break. We’ll always ask you the colour of the water and if we ask you whether it’s green, black, clear. So at any point where we notice the baby has pooed we always come in for monitoring and we also don’t want the baby to sit in the poo because we don’t want the baby to swallow the poo because it could affect the baby if they swallow the poo during childbirth. Hence why it’s really important that if there is poo in the water, once it’s broken and we know, we always need to monitor you.
