Luton had to settle for a point against bottom of the table Sheffield Wednesday despite creating more chances and having the greater possession. | | Euan Duncan reports. |
Striker Steve Howard headed in a quickly taken Kevin Nicholl's free kick inside two minutes but Luton's momentum was halted abruptly when Graham Lee headed in the equaliser from a deflected clearance, looping his effort inside a post 12 minutes later. Owls' keeper David Lucas kept his side in the game, saving well from Warren Feeney and Steve Robinson. The Hatters continued to set the pace in the second half but found themselves trailing shortly after the hour when David Graham appeared from nowhere to direct a through pass beyond the diving Marlon Beresford. The set back was short-lived as within a minute Nicholl's crossed from the left for Howard to net his fourth of the season with a close range header. Luton finished the game strongly and almost won it five minutes from time but Chris Coyne's header from a corner struck the foot of the post. It was two points dropped but the Hatters remain unbeaten at home. The point was enough to lift the Hatters above Watford into third, although manager Mike Newell was aware his side could easily have won the game. "You're always disappointed if you don't win, particularly at home" he said. "But it's another point on the board and having been behind in the second half I was pleased that we equalised. "We weren't happy with the two goals we conceded but you never are really" he added. "They [Wednesday] looked decent and they looked a threat at times and they played some decent stuff. But, having said that, I think we had the majority of the game again." |
