Championship Luton Town 1-1Wolverhampton Wanderers Luton Town drew at home to Wolves in a game that saw Hatters' manager Mike Newell sent to the stands by referee Lee Probert for comments made at half-time. It was an eventful afternoon as Luton celebrated 100 years at Kenilworth Road. Simon Oxley was there. Luton Town were left to reflect on what might have been while Glenn Hoddle would have been happy to leave with a point as his defence, to a man, sank to their knees when the final whistle went. | | Simon Oxley reports. |
Luton had to wait until 11 minutes from time for Kevin Nicholls to equalise, but had laid siege to the Wolves goal before that, especially in the first half, when Chris Coyne had a header cleared off the line, Steve Robinson headed against the bar and Ahmet Brkovic produced a fine save from visiting keeper Michael Oakes. But midway through that half, Wolves had broken away to score with Carl Cort converting Mark Kennedy's cross, and Cort should have made it 2-0 in first half stoppage time, but shot wide when clean through. There weren't as many chances after the break, but they were all Luton's and it was left to Nicholls to equalise after good work from Carlos Edwards. I'm sure the visiting former players would have enjoyed it. They received good applause, as did the current team. After the match, Newell said he felt his side could have won. "I'm a little bit disappointed" he said. "I'm not being greedy I don't think. We created a lot of chances in the second half and looked the fitter side and the stronger side, certainly in the second part of the first half and definitely in the second half. "I think we had the better of the game. Over 90 minutes nobody could dispute that, which is encouraging because they are a lot of people's favourites to go up automatically." Euan Duncan was there. Watford continued to defy the odds following an impressive 3-0 victory at the Britannia Stadium, not without some luck. But crucially the Hornets took full advantage of their good fortune. | | Euan Duncan reports. |
Winger Paul Devlin timed his run into the penalty area to perfection to power in a header from an Anthony McNamee cross midway through the first half. Stoke failed to take their chances and paid the price midway through the second half, when Ashley Young curled in a free kick from the left hand corner of the penalty area. It got worse for Stoke five minutes later when Young was brought down in the area by Potters' keeper Steve Simonsen, who was shown a red card. Substitute keeper Ed de Goey came on to face the resulting spot kick, and although he guessed right, Hornets' striker Marlon King tucked the ball inside the left hand post to atone for his penalty miss against Derby. Stoke were a spent force and Watford coasted for the rest of the game, extending their unbeaten run in the Championship to six games. Manager Adrian Boothroyd was delighted to see his team win again at the ground where they secured their Championship place at the end of last season. "We came here last year and managed to scrape a win and today was a little bit more convincing - obviously with a different set of players" he said. "I'm very pleased" he continued. "The first half was a bit of a mixed game and we needed half time more than them and in the second half I thought that we put in a very professional winning performance." The Dons are still without a win in League One as they struggled to cope with the physical Brentford side but only a spot kick separated the teams in the end. The Bees goal was twice rattled by the visitors as first of all Aaron Wilbraham hit the cross bar and then Paul Mitchell's left-footed effort rebounded off the inside of a post, all inside the first 35 minutes. In truth, the first half belonged to the Dons, they scuppered most Brentford attacks leaving them just long shots, until the second period when Leon Crooks was adjudged to handle in the area and a penalty was awarded. Right-back Kevin O'Connor slotted the penalty home at the second time of asking due to encroachment. The Dons players heads dropped and they didn't look like scoring, although had Malvin Kamara hit the target when one on one,it could have been a different story. Paul Dixon was there. It was excellent entertainment at Edgeley Park but not for the first time his season Wycombe will feel that it was two points lost rather than one point gained. Nathan Tyson broke the deadlock 13 minutes in, when he latched onto a Kevin Betsy throughball to slide the ball into the net. Two minutes later, Stockport were level with a defensive mix up allowing Easter to thump the ball past Talia. After 20 minutes the Chairboys were back in front with a controversial Nathan Tyson penalty restoring the visitors lead. Just before the break Michael Malcolm drew the home side level with a header, but Tyson restored Wycombe's lead eight minutes after the restart with his, and the Chairboys, third of the afternoon. But again, Stockport wouldn't lie down, and another controversial penalty brought them level. It's now six draws out of nine for the Chairboys and they will need to start turning their domination into victories if they are to realise their promotion ambitions. Both sides had opportunities to settle a scrappy game before Henry was dismissed in stoppage time for a second bookable offence. The best chances fell in the opening and final minutes, with Anthony Elding missing a great opportunity to give the hosts the lead and Robert Purdie seeing his late effort saved by Alan Julian. With three wins out of three in front of their own fans, Stevenage started like a steam train, completely dominating the opening exchanges. Top scorer Elding should have scored with barely a minute gone, but he dragged his shot wide from six yards. But Hereford began to settle and, aided by Henry's dismissal, should have snatched all three points when Purdie saw his late effort saved by the feet of Julian.
