Olympian Bethany Shriever: Mental health and wellbeing is important for sporting success

BMX champion Bethany Shriever MBE made history by winning gold for Team GB at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

She believes that looking after her mental health and wellbeing has played an important part in her success to date, she said:

“Being happy and being able to focus fully on your goals is so important in sport and if you lose sight of that, if you become unhappy, then you can’t enjoy the journey along the way.”

The cyclist, who started out at just nine-years-old, believes it’s good to be open about how you are feeling. She added: “Being able to talk to the people around you about your mental health is really, really important and it’s helped me along the way. It’s helped [with what] I’ve achieved in my sport so far.”

Bethany is one of a number of well-known faces taking part in the new Moodboosters initiative, which provides primary school teachers and parents with short, simple and fun videos to support the PSHE curriculum for 5-11 year-olds.

Speaking about why she got involved, she said: “Moodboosters provides an easy way to stop for five minutes and just try something new. Everyone can reset and then get back to focus on the job in hand and learn lots.”
