TEMPO: Time, always on the move, one of life’s earliest challenges is to describe… a moment … in time…. OK drop the big music… it’s giving me a headache… all I’m saying is, if people ask
VOX POP:What time is it ?
TEMPO:…or….
VOX POP:How long’s it going to take?
TEMPO:You need to know, so me… I’m Tempo by the way… and my good friend Sabrina, a fabulous upcycler, are going to help you get time….well and truly told
VOX POP – GROUP:Round the Clock !
TEMPO:Sabrina flies down the grassy verge. She leaps the logs. Dodges the branch… Can she be there by 4 o’ clock… This is gonna be close! …5 seconds to go… 4 seconds … 3 seconds yes, yes she can! Sabrina is ON TIME!!
SABRINA:Hello? Oh Caitlin! Are you here already?Oh…OK …Half an hour …?No problemo! I'll just nip back to my workshop. S’only round the corner.OK… bye
That was Caitlin McClatchey - I am going to be interviewing her for my upcycling blog!! She’s an international swimmer. She's stuck in traffic and she’ll be here in half an hour. What can you do in half an hour?
Phew!
INSERT VOX POPS:
I go to piano lessons and it takes half an hour because it gets dark
In half an hour we could go maybe about 3, 4, maybe four miles.
Depends if you’re off the road or not … if it’s easy maybe four
At the gym I do the climbing wall for half an hour, I can get right to the top on two walls, and the rest of the walls I can either go midway or not at all
Play with your toys, play tyg, play with your computer
Well, this is my pencil tower, which I have built – took me half an hour because it fell down. It took me 15 minutes to build the first one then it fell down, and it took me another 15 minutes to build the second one, so in the end it took me half an hour
In our school we get half an hour to eat our lunch and half an hour to play outside
Em… in half an hour I can have a violin lesson
Thirty minutes is the same as half an hour
On Mondays I used to go to street dance lessons for half an hour
On Fridays in our school we have Golden Time – I play with my friends and sometimes colour on my own, and Golden time lasts for half an hour
SABRINA:It’s me…
TEMPO:Sabareeena! I just left you a message – you forgot something!
SABRINA:No don’t think so…. Let’s see… I’ve got my costume; my shampoo; my lucky broccoli…
TEMPO:What about the present you made for Caitlin?
SABRINA:Yep right here . . oh …Right there … Ah. Thanks Tempo – Just as well Caitlin is half an hour late.
TEMPO:Oooh half an hour… You know you can do magic tricks in half an hour?
SABRINA:You can?
TEMPO:I can… Observe this small piece of paper… which I will now pass to you . . .Place it in your palm . .and cover it . .Whisper ‘Time to grow’
SABRINA:Time to go…
TEMPO:You may joke, but this is a serious business - reveal the paper
SABRINA:Oh my goodness it’s not grown –It’s gone!!
TEMPO:Look inside your back pack
SABRINA:Tempo… you are full of surprises.
TEMPO:And there’s more…Do you know the half hour trick on the paper clock?
SABRINA:No?! Tell me!
TEMPO:Set the clock to 4 o’ clock
SABRINA:Minute hand to the 12. And shorter hour hand to the 4. 4 o’ clock! Uhuh?
TEMPO:Now fold the clock in halfOpen it out!
Move the minute hand half way round the clock… following the fold you just made… The time on your clock will now be….
SABRINA:Half past 4! That is amazing ….
TEMPO:You were meant to meet her at 4 o’ clock. She’s half an hour late which means her new time of arrival is half past 4…
TEMPO:Sabrina – it’s nearly half past 4 - you have to run….!!!
SABRINA:Thanks for the tricks Tempo – byeee!!
TEMPO:Oh, ask her how far she can swim inhalf an hour…
TEMPO VO:Sabrina flies down the grassy verge. She leaps the log. Dodges the branch… Can she be there by half past 4… So close! It’s an absolute nail biter this one…5 seconds to go… 4 seconds to go… 3 seconds yes, yes she can! Sabrina is ON TIME!!
SABRINA:Caitlin! Hi …
CAITLIN: Hi Sabrina! Good to see you.
SABRINA:You made it. Caitlin McClatchey everyone – she is an Olympian and double Commonwealth gold medal winner. Now before I forget – I made you a kit bag in my workshop –
CAITLIN:Thank you
SABRINA:I upcycled it from a wet suit…
CAITLIN:This is brilliant…
SABRINA:I knew you’d like it.
CAITLIN:Thank you
SABRINA:Right … And I’ve got some questions for you for my blog….Now… Caitlin what kind of exercises would you do in 30 minutes – in half an hour.
CAITLIN:I would probably do, for half an hour, circuit exercises, doing a different exercise every one minute, for thirty minutes, I would do things like press ups for a minute, then go on to star jumps for a minute, then do sit ups for a minute, so quite a lot of exercises.
SABRINA:That’s really good… and how many lengths of the pool could you do in half an hour ?
CAITLIN:I would probably do 120 lengths in half an hour
SABRINA:120 lengths… in half an hour – that’s … four a minute. Right, I think we both need to put this to the test.
CAITLIN:Okay, let’s go
SABRINA:I’ve worked out that Caitlin should be able to swim a length in just fifteen seconds. Can you believe it ? Let’s time her.
Wow… she did it… no wonder she’s a champion.
SABRINA:No, I’m not swimming – I only came to time her!
Go CAITLIN only 28 minutes to go!
Video summary
Sabrina’s meeting an Olympic swimmer – who is half an hour late. The children give examples of things in their daily lives that take just half an hour – such as music lessons.
They also remember that half an hour is the same as 30 minutes.
Tempo helps Sabrina find half an hour later on a clock face by folding the clock in half.
Sabrina meets the athlete, and finds out she can swim around 120 lengths in half an hour.
Sabrina works out this is four lengths a minute – and that each length takes her just 15 seconds.
From BBC Series Round the Clock.
Teacher Notes
Key Stage 1:
Explore half by finding half of: different shapes (including a circle), 60 counters (sharing equally between two plates or a 60 number line (by folding a piece of paper in half).
Help children to recognise that half means into two equal parts. Find out how many ways they can fold a circle in half.
As a practical activity, ask children to turn all the way round and then turn half way round or move the minute hand on a clock half way round starting at 12.
Can they move the minute hand half an hour starting from different numbers?
Key Stage 2:
How many different ways can you find half a 4 x 4 square?
Help children to recognise that half means two equal amounts that do not have to be congruent.
Show how the minute hand moves half way round the clock to show half past. Hide the minute hand and just look at the hour hand. Move the hour hand half way between 4 and 5, and ask children to estimate the time
Children could challenge each other to estimate the time using only the hour hand.
Encourage the use of vocabulary such as past 4 o’clock, half way, half past, before 5 o’clock etc.
