Big Dave gets to grips with adjectives.
Adjectives
Adjectives are words that describe a characteristic of a noun.
This is Dave. [Hello].
His jacket is ‘reflective’, his boots are ‘sturdy’ and his hat is ‘hard’.
‘Reflective’, ‘sturdy’ and ‘hard’ are adjectives that describe the nouns jacket, boots and hat.
Adjectives allow us to be specific in describing the noun.
For his own safety, it’s important that Dave doesn’t just wear any hat. It’s important that he wears the one that’s hard.
One way to test if a word is an adjective is to see if it can follow the word ‘seems’.
For example, you could say ‘It seems hard,’ so we know ‘hard’ is an adjective.
But you couldn’t say ‘It seems hat’ because ‘hat’ is a noun, not an adjective.
Adjectives can describe all kinds of important characteristics of nouns.
For example, whether the concrete seems ‘dry’ or ‘wet’.
[Aargh!]
Hmm, this is a ‘sticky’ situation. ‘Sticky’ describes the situation. ‘Sticky’ is an adjective. So let’s cement that learning.
Adjectives are words that describe a characteristic of a noun.
Stay safe, Dave. Stay safe.
