Mr and Mrs Selfie get to grips with antonyms and synonyms.
Antonyms and Synonyms…
Two words are antonyms if their meanings are opposite. Like ‘slow’ and ‘fast’.
Two words are synonyms if their meanings are the same or similar, like ‘pretty’ and ‘lovely’.
Another example would be two words like ‘distracted’ and ‘unfocused’, or ‘vain’ and ‘self-obsessed’. Their meanings are similar. They are synonyms, so you can use one instead of the other, or both together.
They apply to all types of words. For example, ‘road’ and ‘motorway’, ‘rapid’ and ‘fast’, ‘travel’ and ‘move’. They are all synonyms.
Antonyms are words with opposite meaning. Antonyms could be words like ‘safe’ and ‘dangerous’, or ‘carefully’ and ‘carelessly’, for example.
If we replace ‘carefully’ in the sentence, ‘They drive carefully’ with its antonym or opposite, it becomes ‘They drive carelessly’.
So that’s it for antonyms and synonyms.
Two words are antonyms if their meanings are opposite. And two words are synonyms if their meanings are the same or similar.
