KS3 English Language: Making a great speech

Poet Laureate Simon Armitage explores how throughout history, politicians and leaders have used persuasive speeches to get their message across to millions of people.

Teachers could use these short KS3 films in the classroom to explore ways that speakers can get an audience on their side, how to structure a speech and ensure it has an emotional impact.

The series also demonstrates different elements of writing and delivering a persuasive speech, featuring tips from experts including the actor Charles Dance and draws on famous figures and historical speeches. The films include top tips on writing techniques and some do's and dont's when making speeches.

These short films are from the BBC series, Speeches that Shook the World, first broadcast in 2013.

This collection is relevant for teaching KS3 English Language and KS3 Drama in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and third level in Scotland.

Teacher review recommended prior to use in class. Contains some scenes of the Iraq war which some students may find upsetting.
