Song: 'Six wives for Henry'

A song about the six wives of Henry VIII: Katherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard and Catherine Parr - divorced, beheaded, died; divorced, beheaded, survived!

Lyrics

Katherine of Aragon
Was Henry’s number one.
They were married more than twenty years
But Henry wanted a son.

He tried to get an annulment
But he couldn’t get his way.
So Henry split from the Church of Rome,
Much to the Pope’s dismay.

Oh it’s wedding bells for Henry,
Ding, dong, ding dong, ding dong,
Another happy day in church,
Let’s hope this match lasts long!

Number two was Anne Boleyn
But still there was no heir.
Poor Queen Anne was for the chop,
Life really isn’t fair!

Number three was Jane Seymour
Henry was filled with pride.
She gave birth to a baby boy
But then Jane sadly died.

Oh it’s wedding bells for Henry
Ding dong, ding dong, ding dong!
Another happy day in church,
Let’s hope this match lasts long!

Number four was Anne of Cleves
In a marriage so political.
The first time they came face to face,
Henry was…critical!

Number five was Catherine Howard
But Henry couldn’t relax.
He’d heard about her letters,
So she was for the axe.

Oh it’s wedding bells for Henry
Ding dong, ding dong, ding dong!
Another happy day in church,
Let’s hope this match lasts long!

Number six was Catherine Parr
They were married in a trice.
Henry was her number three
For she’d been widowed twice.

Four years later Henry died,
A time of national grief.
But Catherine had survived him,
For her a big relief!

Oh the death knell tolls for Henry,
Ding dong, ding dong, ding dong,
No more happy days in church,
For now he’s dead and gone!
