Object
An object is a noun, noun phrase or pronoun that is governed by a verb or apreposition, which means it comes straight after the verb and shows what the verbis acting upon.
Don’t worry, it’s simpler than it sounds.
‘Eileen loves her garden.’ ‘Garden’ is a direct object. It is the thing the verb actsupon. Question: what does Eileen love? ‘Love’ is the verb. Answer: her garden.‘Garden’ is the object. ‘Eileen hates the weeds.’
What’s the verb? ‘Hates’. What’s thedirect object? Come on, you know it. ‘Weeds’.
Now, there can be more than one object in a sentence. ‘She gives her plants water, fertiliser and lots of love.’ In this sentence, ‘water’, ‘fertiliser’ and ‘lots oflove’ are direct objects. They are what she gives. ‘Gives’ is the verb.
‘Over the years, some plants have grown large.’ This one is very large indeed, in fact,Eileen doesn’t remember ever planting this one. So that’s food for thought.
An object is a noun, noun phrase or pronoun that is governed by a verb or a preposition,as in ‘The plant ate Eileen.’ Eileen is the object. She is the one who was eaten. Luckilyfor Eileen, she isn’t that tasty, the plant spits her out. What a lucky object she is.
