NARRATOR:'Ready, steady Number Squad. Bring on the numbers, here's Rodd!'
RODD:Oh, hiya Number Squad!
RODD:Thank you very much. You're too kind.
RODD:Check it out. I have been making a clown outfit to wear to my juggling lessons. Are you ready for a seriously number-y question about…
RODD:Buttons.
RODD:Okay. At the moment, there are, count with me… One… Two… Three buttons!
RODD:But… There's a space here for one more. Oh, yes my friends. Check it out.
RODD:One… Two… Three… A-ha! I need to add another one. Just as well, I have my trusty sewing kit. Here we go.
RODD:There you go. So, here's my big question… Now that I've added one more button, how many are there altogether? Come on, join in. Let's count.
RODD:One… Two… Three… Four! Brilliant. One more than three is four!
RODD:Hey, I know another way we can show three add one. Would you like to see? Alright. Where did I leave my abacus? No fuss! We're on a mission, checking out those figures using… Addition!
RODD:Hello abacus. Let's pretend these balls are buttons. How many buttons were on my coat to start with? Do you know? Three. Well remembered! Let's count three. Ready?
RODD:One… Two… Three. Then we added one more button. Do, do, do, do!
RODD:So, how many did we have altogether? Drumroll… Let's count. One… Two… Three… Four, altogether! Three, add one, does make four.
RODD:It's the same when I use my fingers. Three… Add one… Is four! Two, three, four! Woohoo!
CAPTION:Counting with Rodd
NARRATOR:'Attention, attention, Number Squad, 'It's time to move with Juggling Rodd.'
RODD:Hey-hey! I am loving my four buttons. Look at this.
RODD:
Three add one is four # # Three add one is four
And I'll tell you what else… Three oranges. Now, would you like to see me juggle with one more?
RODD:You would. Okay, well. This might be a good time to tell you that I've only started the juggling lessons. Okay, let's do it.
RODD:Okay…
RODD:I need more practice.
RODD:Okay. Now it's your turn to move. Let's move our big clown feet. Up you get! We're gonna do some big clown steps. Or, turns of your wheel if you're in a wheelchair. Okay. That's it. Find a space.
RODD:Yep, space is good. We're doing big steps. Okay. Wait for it, wait for it. Let's do three. Ready, and…
RODD:One! That's it. Okay…
RODD:Two! Good stepping.
RODD:Three!
RODD:We can't reach! What should we do?
RODD:What? Oh, take one more step! Okay.
RODD:Do it with me. Ready? Step!
RODD:Okay. Check it out! Pretty smart, huh? Now tell me, how many big steps did we take altogether? Oh, number track.
RODD:We did three giant steps, plus one more, so that made four giant steps in total! You rock!
RODD:
That's altogether, be so clever # # Adding up and you know what's more # # Adding up with the three plus one # # You know it's got to be four # # If you wanna know what to do # # Listen out, I'm telling you # # Easy when you know the rules # # Feels so good when you add it all # # I feel the numbering
RODD:See you next time!
Rodd is sewing giant buttons on his clown coat and asks us to help him work out how many buttons there will be if he adds one more.
We count with him as he demonstrates using his special abacus, his fingers and juggling with fruit.
Then we join in with a clown footsteps game, check our counting with a number track and sing a number rap about ‘3 plus 1’.

Teacher Notes
Children can make up their own 3 plus 1 rhymes: ‘I had 3 — and added 1 more, so in the end I had 4!’.They can make ‘finger rings’ with 3 silver paper rings and 1 gold paper ring.
Children can balance 3 beanbags of 1 colour on their bodies and try to add 1 more of a different colour, saying the total.
Pause the clip before Rodd’s clown footsteps game. After the clip, children can pretend to be different animals, taking 3 steps and ‘1 more’ in order to reach ‘food’ (eg floor bunny jumps to reach a ‘carrot’).
