Counsellor Cat by Melody W.
Counsellor Cat noticed that mental health was declining amongst humans so decided to do something about it. He set up a clinic which became surprisingly well regarded. The smartly groomed ginger cat lay on an oak desk, licking between his toes, when the doorbell rang. A stressed man entered the room and perched on the sofa opposite."Name?" enquired Counsellor Cat in a rich, warm voice."Charlie Wellman.""Problem?""I've been fired.""More time for sleeping. Enjoy it while you can. Next."
Counsellor Cat swished his tail and managed to flick one of his ears inside out. Unaware or unbothered about how ridiculous he looked, he began scratching some new carvings into the furniture. Suddenly the doorbell rang and a lady in low spirits appeared."Name?""Mary Elswin.""Problem?""I'm lonely.""Get a pet. Next."
Counsellor Cat was nibbling delicately on a fish when the doorbell rang again and an anxious woman arrived."Name?""Emily Betts.""Problem?""I'm worried about my health.""Eat more fish, but not mine."
Charlie slumped into bed, down in the dumps but determined to have a good night's sleep as Counsellor Cat had instructed. Soon he was dreaming of his carefree youthful days, fishing in a nearby lake and proudly bringing back the filling for Grandma's delicious pie. Charlie awoke with an exciting idea, perhaps he could catch fish to sell. Rummaging through the shed, he dragged out his old equipment. Except for an easily fixed hole in the net and a couple of bent hooks, it was in relatively good condition. Charlie loaded the car and sped to the lake.
Mary was willing to try any advice, especially Counsellor Cat's, and immediately visited the local animal shelter. After careful consideration, she chose Jack, a friendly beagle who curled up with her in the evenings and gave off warmth like a portable radiator. Mary adored her new companion, even when he became overexcited around squirrels. Before long, colleagues noticed changes in Mary's behaviour. She was chattier and jollier, perhaps more like herself. One day, she was even asked on a date and accepted. However, she would need somebody to look after Jack.
Mary's neighbour, Emily was more than happy to help. Following Counsellor Cat'srecommendation, Emily now walked to the local market every day to buy fresh fish and she offered to take Jack with her. Regular fresh air and exercise had improved Emily's health and lifted her mood. The sun shone brightly as Jack sniffed enthusiastically at the mingled smell of crisp pastries, roasting meat and perfumed candles. Weaving their way through the crowd, Emily stopped at the fish stall with colourful bunting above spelling Charlie's Dream Catch. She joined the queue and smiled to herself as she overheard a conversation, "Can you handle the customers please, Mary is expecting me.""No problem Charlie, enjoy your date."
Counsellor Cat stretched, ready for the next human who needed someone to listen. He purred contentedly in the knowledge that things usually work out in the end.
