A red boat on a blue sea with a white cloud in the sky

Adrift by Locke S.

I shot through a crimson tunnel, teeming with thousands of entities like myself. After just a few heart-pulses, I reached the colossal Air Bellows and picked up some life saving oxygen, as I've done tens of thousands of times before.Next stop, Thinking Station. My friend Maroon floated over me, we chatted about how we have the most important job in the body. We deliver the oxygen that our Greater Being needs in order to lift the crazily heavy weights that makes him famous, The person we serve is a champion athlete.I barged my way through a throng of dawdling platelets.

"Get out the way! The most important red blood cell, coming through!"

My voice carried over the sea of blood. Some yelled back at me.

"We all work to keep the body alive, not just you, you arrogant clot!"

They floated away, shaking with shame at me. I didn't care about their insults, I had more pressing duties to attend to!

Suddenly, a huge metal spike punctured through the arm I was in, and a whooshing noise shook me to my essence. I was being sucked out of the only home I've ever known!

The next thing I knew, I was in a transparent tube. Everything around me was inky black and frigid. I gave a shuddering sigh and pounded at my icy prison. After many a day, it finally warmed up and I was squirted out again but this time I went into the tube happily - I'm going back!

Enthusiastically, I entered the body, looking for my old friend, Maroon. And then it dawned on me, I was in a new body! Totally shocked, I asked the other platelets, "Where am I?"

"You're in a girl who's had a serious injury!" one exclaimed.

"Thank you for coming, Luna desperately needs you!" another one cried.

I wanted to be back in my athletic Greater Being, not some sickly girl!

I floated around doing my job and gradually her heart-pulses grew stronger, but all I wanted was to return to the body that had won so many medals.

Then a sound emanated all around me - a voice as smooth as silk, sweet as honey.

Where was it coming from?

It was the girl!

A warmth enveloped me as she sang.

"Thank you for blood

You saved my life

I got hit by a car lying in the mud

They operated on me with a knife"

The symphony echoed through my memories and for the first time I felt true, unselfish happiness.

My kind do not live for very long, but for the time I had, I loved Luna with all my being.

I melted away, but I cherished her song in my dying moments.I knew she would always remember me, for I gave my life to save hers.

I am a blood cell

And I am in your debt

Because you gave me the most joyous moment of my life

Thank you Luna…
