Spring Is Here! by Maia H. R.
One bright, sunny morning, a creature called a Springling awoke. "It's time!" she announced cheerfully. Winter - the time of Christmas - had come to an end. Spring was here, and it was the Springling's job to bring Spring all across London. The little Springling headed outside to see its friends climbing trees to reach the empty branches while others would grow tall grass and beautiful flowers. The Springling (named May) started by climbing trees. She looked at the tall trees that towered above her like giants while she was only the size of a thumb. She started to climb - it was long and hard, but eventually she reached the top. Carefully, she made her way along a thin branch. Once there, she started to summon the blossoms. "Spring is here," she told the branch calmly. Suddenly blossoms began to sprout. After the tree was covered with blossoms, May picked up a bright green leaf she had hoisted up with her. She held it tight on the sides. Without warning, she jumped… the air pushed up against the leaf and she floated down gracefully. After that she started growing the grass and flowers. Soon enough, there was long, green grass filled with bluebells, violets, tulips and magnolia plus many more, shooting up from the ground. May's next task was to help persuade the sun to come out. That was going to be tricky. Too often the Springlings would fail, and the wintry weather would continue. The humans seemed to be disappointed by that, too. Often the Springlings would have to perform odd rituals to convince the sun to emerge. Luckily, this time they succeeded.May ran off as fast as she could for the next job, which was her favourite: this was when the Springlings would wake all the hibernating animals. May was chosen to waken the squirrels in Herne Hill. Eventually, she reached the home of her favourite squirrel, named Winter. She lived in a large tree with a small hole in the middle (but a lot more spacious inside). Winter was the sweetest and fluffiest of any squirrel. May never had any problems waking her from slumber. May crept up and whispered: "Spring is here." Winter woke up immediately, but was still slightly sleepy. Then, she picked up a shiny nut and happily gave it to May before excitedly scampering outside. After many other difficult tasks for May, it was evening time. The little Springling returned home and lay on her comfy bed. Tomorrow was the first official day of Spring. "Spring is here," whispered the tired Springling. As the moon shone and the stars twinkled brightly, the small Springling drifted off to sleep.
