Liquid: Twobicles & £2m

The Ipswich nightclub Liquid has had a revamp and it's reopening as Liquid Envy on Cardinal Park. The owners Luminar Leisure say they've spent two million pounds, including the intriguing feature of double-toilets and chat-hatches in the Ladies!

It's a complete mystery to the male half of the population, but a well-known fact that woman simply can't go into toilets on their own.

Two's company

At Liquid Envy in Ipswich, they've taken that to a new level with the installation of the 'twobicle.' It's a double cubicle in the Ladies where you can go in with your bezzie, sit on separate loos and chat away to your heart's content.

The chat-hatch

The club's manager is Dan Guerche "If you don't want to share a twobicle, we have single cubicles with a chat-hatch in the dividing partition. Each user can choose whether to have their flap locked or open. We've also got a hair dryer and hair straighteners in the room.

"We're not introducing twobicles in the Gents(!), but we are filling the urinal trough with ice and citrus fruits. What do blokes normally do? We aim at the fag-butts. Men can now aim at the fruit which will means the loos should smell a lot better!"

Oldies welcome

The refurbished club is divided into Liquid for over-18s and Envy for the over-23s. Dan Guerche claims a more mature clientele would find it comfortable "23 was chosen because we felt there was a lot of difference between 18 and 23. Our music policy in Envy will be classic party tunes from the Sixties onwards, so there's no reason 30-, 40- or 50-somethings shouldn't feel left out."

Drink and drugs

With national health fears about the level of alcohol-drinking, Dan Guerche says they're not there to encourage bingeing "We won't be offering any cheap drinks promotions. We're trying to serve drinks with a bit of panache. The aim of the business is entertainment - we want to get people in early and then they have a few drinks over a long period of time.

"We employ drugs dogs on the front door. If there's any indication that a person has drugs on them, the dog will sit down next to them in the queue. Inside we'll have security staff looking out for that sort of thing."

Bitter drinkers will be disappointed though - the only beer they serve is lager.

The VIP invite-only opening night is Thursday 24th August 2006, with the first public night the following day.

They're auctioning a pair of VIP tickets for charity on Ebay. Money raised will go to Terri Calvesbert - the Ipswich girl who had 90% burns in a house fire. If you search on "Liquid Envy Ipswich" you'll find the auction item.
