Jo Ellis

Suffolk Sports Awards 2006

Ipswich Ladies and England hockey player Jo Ellis has been named Suffolk Sports Personality of the Year. Pete Kaznica of Ipswich Basketball Club is the BBC Radio Suffolk Unsung Hero.

The Ipswich Town chairman David Sheepshanks introduced the awards ceremony. There were 170 nominations across the 10 categories.

Jo Ellis was delighted with her award after a season which saw her pick up a Commonwealth bronze with England in Melbourne: "It's great to get recognised for something you put a lot of hard work into. It's also great to hear about people who're getting kids involved in sport. I definitely think they should do these sports awards again."

BBC Radio Suffolk's Unsung Hero award went to Pete Kaznica for his dedication to his club and the Suffolk Basketball Association. He's missed just three Ipswich games during 20 years with the club. He's delighted with his award: "I'm very surprised! It's not just for me - it's for the club. A lot of other clubs have people with similar stories to tell. In Suffolk we don't get the amount of grants that clubs in the big cities get, so it's a great credit to the county that we have people who do the work."
