The three Y Factor contestants

Steve, Andrea and Andrew

The Y Factor

Three of BBC Radio Suffolk's journalists are trying to prove there's more to their microphone technique than just reading the news. They will be taking part in the Y Factor on the station's stage at this year's Suffolk Show.

I've always enjoyed singing - to myself in the car or shower usually. But not everyone around me has shared my enjoyment.

And it seems my colleagues Andrew Woodger and Stephen Martin have had the same problem. In a few short weeks, we're hoping to transform ourselves from ropey but enthusiastic amateurs to competition winning, stop-you-in-your-tracks, single-releasing stars!

X Factor 2005 winner Shayne Ward

X Factor 2005 winner Shayne Ward

The idea is to hold a singing competition along the lines of televsion's X Factor - 2005 winner Shayne Ward is probably worried about this new threat to his career. The Y Factor comes complete with the bear-pit of savage judges including BBC Radio Suffolk contributors Simon Warr (who's also the headteacher from Channel 4's That'll Teach 'Em) and Bob Shelley.

It will take place on the BBC Radio Suffolk stage on the first day of the Suffolk Show (Wednesday 31st May 2006). It should be entertaining - although whether that will be because we sing well, or sing badly remains to be seen! A man with a long crook will be waiting in the wings if it gets too painful.

Belinda Gillett

Belinda Gillett

To help us prepare for the big event, singing teacher Belinda Gillett from Felixstowe is giving us weekly lessons for a month. During our first, she tried to establish whether we could sing in tune - and what notes suit us best. She got us to sing songs of our own choosing unaccompanied. Something to strike fear into anyone, but when you know you have trouble holding a tune, it's even more daunting.

Inititally I chose the Frank Sinatra standard "The Lady Is A Tramp", but I've since changed it to "Into The Groove" by Madonna. Stephen chose Gloria Jones/Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" while Andrew attempted "You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth" by Meat Loaf. These still may not be the final choices come showtime!

Steve and Andrew have had they're clothing put together by Chuckles Costumes of High Road West in Felixstowe. However, we're not trying to "be" Madonna, Meatloaf or Marc Almond - we're just trying to look good. It's more X Factor than Stars In Their Eyes!

I think it also triggered a little of the competitive spirit. Certainly, I have to confess to loudly trying to out-do the blokes on the high notes! Then we were allowed to sing all together - which was much more friendly.

At the end of the first hour, she concluded we weren't unteachable - but we didn't have much time to get our acts together. Now we have to choose tunes to perform on the day, and rehearse.

Belinda says she'll know if we've practiced or not between lessons. So it looks like - for the time being at least - our friends, neighbours and colleagues are going to have to put up with us singing more than ever.

Rock School singer Chris Hardman will be following the Y Factor at the Suffolk Show performance. Not quite the same as supporting Judas Priest in LA - let's hope he doesn't get blown off the stage by these rank amateurs!

josh ravens
Great stuff Andrea and I think Nick Pandophi is very funny

The Woodge's fan
My money's on Andrew...he sounds like he's just dying to really give it socks. Keep practicising Andrew and just let it all out! Will be logging on to hear how you performed on the day.

Tim Firman
i think you 3 are great sports to put your necks and maybe my ears on the line . I have loved listening to the updates and will sadly miss the final ....

Mary Hutson

Don in Ipswich
It sounds so fuuny hearing it on Nic Pandolfi's show I can not wait to cheer the brave 3 on at the showground. Good Luck & thanks for making me smile.

Lolly, South Yorkshire
I think Stephen should sing a Black Sabbath number like Paranoid or War Pigs or Judas Priest's Breaking the Law / Living After Midnight. It'll sound great.

Larissa Saxby - Bridger
Being able to claim the honour of having singing lessons with a chap who was friends with Vaughan Williams, may I be permitted to add, Stephen whilst Tainted Love may not naturally suit your voice, you do possess a lovely deep singing voice, more of a natural Baritione, hence show this off!

Larissa Saxby - Bridger
Whilst I profess I am not a muscian,I am awfully passionate about music. Thus I say, I'm afraid Stephen you have chosen the wrong song for your voice,it simply will not do...The competition is very much between Andrea and Andrew. They both sing well, although Andrew has the edge, he sings in tune and with warmth, feeling and gusto! Break a Leg...

Nigel Plumber
I think you sound quite bad but can not wait to see you all perform at teh Suffolk Show .
