Mr Hercules goes from strength to strength

Rob Dunger
The Mr Hercules Bodybuilding Spectacular took place on Sunday 16th October 2005. The contest was staged in Essex with several Suffolk competitors taking part.

Scott Horton knows how to organise these events. The years of experience in the fitness industry certainly showed when he organised the latest contest for the sport of bodybuilding.

Staged at Colchester's Hippodrome Night Club, the audience packed out all the available space to look in awe and admiration at the results of years of sweat and sheer hard work.

Before the show, I went backstage just to feel the tension as the guys made their final preparations. Fake tan was being liberally applied by the competitors... sometimes with the help of their buddies, partners, girlfriends - and even a Mum!

The Judges were set in place, and the expertly planned and stage-managed event began with rousing music and the continual flash of cameras. The main categories for the event were:

Alan Harris and Rob Cole

  • First timers
  • Novices
  • Masters over 40

They say that in such a competition there are no losers, but try telling that to a guy who has being placed 2nd or 3rd in such a competition. Their disappointment was so bitter it showed through the tough exterior. There is only one acceptable result, that of First Place. From a bodybuilder's point of view, anything less than first is to lose.

Triumphant faces paraded their trophies, the runners-up did their best to keep a brave face - but left quickly.

Guys, there's always next year! You Suffolk guys ... keep going, we are rooting for you!

NOWT WRONG WITH BODYBUILDING OR POWERLIFTING OR COME TO THING OF IT - ANY SPORT THOSE WITH THE BALLS TO GET UP ON STAGE AND WALK THE WALK ARE A CUT ABOVE THE PENCILNECKS

GB
It's not just about looking good- it can be a healthy pursuit if bodybuilding is done without drugs. I haven't been ill once since I started training seriously. The fake tan is needed because of the bright lights on stage. It is also helps to make the muscles look more defined.

bob
are they so obssed with looking good.that they forget they are men not pretty women

Mr Hercules
Hey good to see the herculeons, you can see more pictures on the hercules gym official website http://www.hercules-gym.co.uk Good review :-)

Stuart
Interesting article Rob about a subject I know little about. I am amazed at how dark these men need there tan to be, rather unatural, unless it looks paler on stage? Well, one thing is certain after looking at the extensive picture gallary..... that an awful lot of hard work has been put in for several years. These men must be very dedicated to their art.

Great review ! i think its good that you are involved in the events !

John =)
there is nothing wrong with wanting to enhance your body - but is BIG really beautiful when from the photos on here, they seemed to have forgotten to work on their legs... and really, is fake tan required...? no, it's not the colour of the skin thats taken into account, just how well they athletes have worked on their fab bodies, the tone, definition and shape...

Tony
Great review

I like the way this article captures the degree of obsession that must drive competitive body builders to achieve what they do. It is as keenly fought, and lose is as keenly felt, as in any other competitive sport. I could feel the tension that must have crackled in the venue.
