Inside Lives: everyone has a story inside them
Wayne ThextonHuman Pearls And Newspaper Oysters

Author: Wayne Thexton
We all know people we love to be around - but why? What is it that means we make he friends we do?

Inside LivesHear - and read Wayne's story
"So, what was it that made us friends? Well, many things, including a shared appreciation of tea, channel 4 television dramas, open chit-chat and being able to show-off in writing emails."

Wayne considers why it is we're attracted to certain kinds of people.

What is it that makes “a friend” a friend? Shared interests?

Good character or- ‘personality’? Maybe a similar sense of humour, or perhaps something more grand like ‘loyalty’.

A friend would probably possess all of these things… most of the time. Whatever your answer, it is the stuff that TV and film - and real life! - are full of – always in your face… but rarely stated.

Asking myself “what makes a friend a friend?” I reckon that if you have interests then that probably makes you more interesting – and ‘that’ is a healthy start in building a friendship.

That’s how it was with ‘J’ when I met him a couple of years ago – a community-conscious funny-eloquent-northern-bloke with a liking for tea and tennis - versus my not-so-simple “football day-tripper”: quite the happy odd couple.

So, what was it that made us friends? Well, many things, including a shared appreciation of tea, channel 4 television dramas, open chit-chat and being able to show-off in writing emails. What have I learned from meeting ‘J’? That some of the best friends – maybe ones that we don’t even know yet - can appear from some of the most unexpected of places - 'J' was my landlord.

As I now leave Stoke-on-Trent bound for the green green grass of… Uttoxeter (and beyond!), I’m convinced that ‘J’ and I will stay in touch for the rest of our lives, and that’s an impressive outcome from what started with my responding to a small newspaper advert that began simply… “House to let…”
