We all experience embarrassing moments in our lives. This was one of many. As a young boy I was pretending to be Tarzan to impress the other kids, only to find I was being observed by someone I did not know would see me. I think others can relate to this!
Inside Lives has been very interesting and instructive.
Like many other children during the War, my twin sister and I were sent away from the bombing for a few weeks.
We went to Boscombe, near Bournemouth on the South coast, along with a number of other kids. Boscombe has quite high cliffs and we often sat up there watching Commandos from a nearby camp climbing up them. Some were laden with heavy machine guns, a tripod or a box of ammunition. They were tough, those Commandos... At 10 I wanted to be just as tough. My favourite game was Tarzan, probably because as the oldest I became Tarzan. My sister Beryl was either Jane or Cheetah! The trunk of an oak tree on top of the cliff became a platform for me to give my familiar call, Ah Eh Ah Eh Ah. This terrifying sound was aimed at Hitler, to let him that know if he came anywhere near us he was facing an invincible enemy. That would keep him away! One day, stripped to the waist and beating my chest, I was just making my fearsome call Ah Eh Ah, when it died in my throat with embarrassment. A couple sat on a bench nearby, a Commando and his girlfriend. They were watching my antics with amused grins on their faces. I recognised the girl. Her name was Eileen. I also recognised the Commando. His name was Ron. He was my brother. |
