"When I won my black belt everyone wanted to interview me because I am the only person in Great Britain with special needs to have achieved a black belt."
Sarcha is 29 years old and lives at Meir Park in Stoke-on-Trent. She works at 'My Voice - My Choice' at Winton House in Stoke. Her hobbies are Tae Kwando, music, football and going to the pub.
My story is about Tae Kwando and the five years it has taken me to achieve a black belt. Inside Lives has given me the chance to learn new skills and meet lots of interesting people.
I am 29 years old and have special needs. Five years ago I decided to learn a martial art. I chose Tae Kwando. During the past five years I have worked very hard to achieve six belts. My instructor and my friend Andrew Cawley helped me a lot. Andrew's dad Bill always encouraged me and used to say 'Come on Sarcha you can do it!' Bill died last year and I really miss him. In April, it was time to take my black belt grading. I had to go to Manchester for the exam. I was very nervous. But I could hear Bill telling me that I could do it. And I did it. Last year Andrew entered me into the Scottish Open Championships and I came 3rd and won a bronze trophy. This year I entered again and won a bronze and a silver award. When I won my black belt everyone wanted to interview me because I am the only person in Great Britain with special needs to have achieved a black belt. I was very excited to see myself on the television and all my family and friends recorded me on their videos. I did it for them and for Bill and Andrew. And I did it for myself. |
