Sydney's father came to Britain many years before the Nazi rise to power, other family members were not so lucky. | | | | | | |
"For me, that journey was a kind of pilgrimage, to honour 39 members of my family who perished..." After visiting Auschwitz I was so traumatised by what I had seen. Finding that so many people were, and are, unaware of what had happened in the German death camps, I decided to tell a very tiny part of the story of the camps. Auschwitz in particular. Sydney Morris is 79 and lives in Basford, Newcastle under Lyme. He married Freda in 1948, building a family of two sons and a grandaughter. Freda passed away 11 years ago. Sydney's father started a bespoke tailoring business in Hanley soon after his arrival in Britain in 1907. Sydney took over and ran the business for 50 years before his own retirement. Since retiring, Sydney is involved with voluntary work and serves on various local commitees. An active member of the Jewish community, he regularly talks to groups and schools about alternative religions. Sydney spent a very interesting and fulfilling few hours preparing his story for Inside Lives.
