2003collectors Could you please tell me what has happened to The Record Collectors on Friday evenings? This is a favourite programme of mine and I'm missing it! I look forward to hearing from you Nick Brooks
Click Here to add a message
Tim Beech Asst Editor BBC Radio Stoke replies: "....I'm sorry you're missing the Record Collectors but the programme has been on air since the 1980s and, while we recognise its popularity with some sections of the audience, we felt it had largely run its course. As a result, we're offering a new "Northern Soul" programme with Mary Fox which in its early weeks has proved extremely popular. We realise that any programme changes will always upset fans of the exisiting schedule and do not take such decisions lightly. I hope you will enjoy the new Friday night show." |
radio stoke I felt I had to write to you to express my utter despair about the "direction" that Radio Stoke is going in. I had been an avid, long standing listener for many, many years, and very much enjoyed the style of presentation, programme content and standard of presenters. Very sadly this has dramatically changed over the last couple of years, and very much for the worse.I don't wish to "get personal" about the presenters, but will just say that standards have slipped, to say the very least. I will generalise by saying that they are of very poor quality, tending to be silly, patronising, and full of stupid clichés. The early daytime presenters are the worst culprits, and I have stopped listening to those "shows". I now find however that I have virtually stopped listening to Radio Stoke altogether,
The inane "man/woman" programme/news/presenter "introducers" simply drive me up the wall!! I refer to the recorded man and woman announcers who introduce all the presenters at the beginning of programmes, and during (many times!) and after the news etc- such as ....."BBC radio Stoke, with Tim Wedgwood", and other incessant announcements such as ....."the phone lines are open, telephone 01782, Two Oh Eight Dubble Oh Eight" And yes they DO drive me up the wall!!
I also find the constant, silly "jingles" and trailers for other programmes irritating in the extreme, along with the over-proliferation of silly "competitions".
The standard of news reports has also dropped, with almost every bulletin having the presenter introducing a taped report that doesn't materialise - the presenter not even acknowledging the fact or indeed apologising for it!!! Through all of this I had continued to tune in for sports news and programmes, despite Mr Mc Garry's appalling pronunciations of names. I have to say though that the "final straw" was last evening on the Friday sports preview programme, when your new presenter introduced "our special guest" Bob Wilson. He then proceeded to ask a question to this "guest", then obviously switched on a taped interview for his reply, having wiped out the original interviewer's voice!!! We were then subjected to Bob Wilson answering further questions that we couldn't hear!! I simply could not believe the crassness of this! Unbelievably the presenter continued to perpetuate this farcical charade! I shall continue to listen to Nigel Johnson's superb commentaries of Stoke City games, but he is the only person I shall be tuning into from now on, unless things change dramatically for the better. I know that I am not alone in my sincere disappointment over the very poor standards that are now very much in evidence at Radio Stoke, from my discussions with friends and family. I fear that you are about to loose a lot of listeners. From a very, very disgruntled ex-Radio Stoke listener James Cook-Martin Trentham

ITS NOT FAIR!!! NAS T AND GULLY MAY BE TALENTED FOLK.... BUT WHERE AND WHEN DO RADIO STOKE PROMOTE OTHER LOCAL ARTISTS... ONLY ALLOW CHILDISH SLAGGING MATCHES ON THE MUSIC MESSAGE BOARD.. THE SAME GOES IN A LOT OF CASES, MAYBE THE STATION COULD BE CLASSED AS A RACIST STATION IF THEY WERE NOT TO PLAY THE YOUNG RAPPERS MUSIC.. FAIR PLAY TO YOU.. YOU HAVE A LOCAL BANDS A2Z...WOW.. BUT DO ANY OF THESE BANDS EVER HAVE AIRPLAY.?
BIG CASH PRIZES WERE LABELLED ON THE RADIO AS YOUNG IDIOTS WHO GO AROUND AND VANDALISE THE STREETS OF OUR LOVELY CITY..
I THINK THAT CONTACT SHOULD BE MADE WITH OUR LOCAL TALENT AND MOREE SUPPORT MADE BY RADIO PEOPLE TOWARDS LOCAL BANDS THANKYOU FOR LISTENING

Young Mothers I do not wish to listen to a show presneted by rich woman who thinks it is correct have a life of luxury paid for by the working people, as I did for 45 years. The last person on the [radio stoke] morning show told of his two daughters and told the story perfectly. He told your presenter to get into the real world, I agree with him, what's she doing on the radio preaching her bias opinion and knocking other listeners down. I dont want to listen to her. vale Hello Is there any possibility that you and PTV could get together to braodcast the Port Vale AGM over the internet, to enable Vale fans to listen who are based, as I am, overseas? Tony Boulton
Click Here to add a message
Tim Beech Asst Editor BBC Radio Stoke replies: I'm afraid there are no plans at present to broadcast the Port Vale AGM via the web. The costs involved in such a transmission would fall on BBC Radio Stoke rather than the club or PTV and we would be unable to justify it as an exclusive offering to web users. |
Shame On You Radio Stoke! Can't find enough money to continue covering two separate local games on a Saturday yet you still have reporters at the ground? Absolutely beyond me! Local football coverage is a cornerstone of your service. By reducing it, you vastly decrease the credibility of your station to most, if not all, football supporters throughout the region. Find another way to cut costs or improve efficiency. Give us our footy back! Clive Crewe

The reply is: Thanks for your enquiry. Unfortunately, the cost lies in not the reporters, but the rights to be able to do football commentaries - which are extremely expensive, and we cannot currently afford to broadcast two at the same time on a weekly basis. This is constantly under review and we will make editorial judgements on splitting frequencies when justified as the season progresses. We are also hopeful that any new agreement with the football authorities will improve this situation for listeners from next season. BBC Local Radio is not currently available on the net, although our football commentaries do appear on official club websites. However, it is intended that BBC Local Radio will be streamed at some stage in the not too distant future. We anticipate that BBC Radio Stoke should be on DAB next Spring (2004). Tim Beech Asst Editor BBC Radio Stoke. |

chatrooms Microsoft closing its chatroom is like banning one brand of cigarettes - that's not going to stop people smoking - they'll just choose another brand. microsoft is doing this for commercial reasons not because of the paedophile problem. Carl Pender Hamble

to teresa ... chatrooms I too heard the interview when the "expert" was saying that closing chatrooms would not stop the paedophiles. I agree he was insensitive bit the point remains. More children are killed and maimed by cars EVERY YEAR than have ever been lured to paedophiles via chatrooms - so if we acceopt the risk from cars, why do we not accept the risk from chatrroms?
The fact is that cars won't go away, and neither will chatrooms, so we must educate kids (AND parents!) better to understand the problems of chatrooms Mark Braley Codsall

chatrooms I usually enjoy listening to radio Stoke but have to say I was offended this morning. The website director on Janine Machin and Kevin Ferneyhough's show had an attitude which I think was far too liberal and careless. In reference to the issue of Microsoft closing down their chatrooms... I was delighted.. but horrified when he dismissed the statistic of ONLY 12 children being lured and attacked over the last 12 years.. well, for me, 12 children is 12 children too many.
He was far too careless in saying that - imagine if a listener had lost a child through abduction. I'm sure that if one of those 12 children had been one of his own, he wouldn't have said that. It was very insensitive and I'm sure I was not the only offended one. Teresa Phillips

commentaryty I recently telephoned the Stoke radio station to complain about the coverage of our local football teams,it was when i tuned in to listen to a commentary of stoke vs. Gillingham on Tuesday night that i was shocked and dismayed that Crewe Alex were on both frequencies-thus not giving way to have stokes match on one or the other outputs. I was told when i telephoned that there was not enough money to cover all of the fixtures, and i pointed out that what was the point of having Nigel Johnson at the Britannia Stadium if there was only going to be bit part comentary of the team. I could not attend the fixture and was lookin forward to listening to the game on the radio,as it is covered so well by Nigel Johnson, and was dissapointed only to get Crewes action. I am an avid listener to the radio station and love hearing when my team are away from home so i get the full match experience on the radio,it dissapoints me when we cannot get all three teams matches on at once as it has been done in the past. Weather reports on Radio Stoke Today, presumaby due to the change in breaqkfast programme format, there was no weather forecast from Paul Damari, who I believe gives the most descriptive and usually accurate forecasts on the air. Can we not have him continue to deliver a forecast at 8.15am - preferably at the exact time every day (it has been annoying during Tim Wedgewwod's programme to have the forecast floating over a time slot ranging from 8.15 to 8.25 on any day to suit Mr Wedgewood's comments & phone-ins. ) I expect a forecast to be within a minute or so every day - like the news on the hour - please bring Damarri back at a precise time - say 8.18 for example - every day. Regards Jeremy Parker

PLASTIC SURGERY GUY I've just been told by a friend that MILES KENDALL will be featured on the new Tim Wedgwood show starting tuesday, Sept 23rd from 4-5pm. He's the guy who's had over £48,000 on plastic surgery!
Am told he's doing a regular monthly showbiz/celebrity gossip spot on Tim's show! I've seen Miles on loads of TV and am shocked Radio Stoke have been able to get him! He's so funny and outrageous! I'll definitely be listening! Thanks Radio Stoke! You've really impressed me! monny Hanley

where's thes sense, Radio Stoke? On Saturday 13 September I tuned is as usual to 94.6 to listen to "Network Gold", a programme I never miss unless I am away from home and out of the region. I was disappointed to find instead a commentary of a football match. Yesterday, Saturday 20 September, exactly the same thing happened.According to your published schedule, football coverage starts at 2 o'clock on Saturday. To run it until after 7.30 pm is insulting and offensive. What is more, although the presenter mentioned on a number of occasions that we were "about to join Network Gold," he appeared incapable of shutting up, and even found it necessary to rerun parts of the commentary. Not everyone is obsessed by football, yet everyone is perforce a licence payer. Some of us actually want to hear the music programme, there is little enough music from that era broadcast nowadays and we aren't all fans of Williams. Radio Stoke has three wavelengths at its disposal. Is it too much to ask that one of these be used for the regular, scheduled music programme, and not commandeered by the overgrown schoolboys whose sad little lives revolve around a mere game? M.W. Lloyd

And the answer is....We recognise that while many people enjoy the football, there are others who love Network Gold. Therefore, when this situation next occurs, we will endeavour to advise listeners well in advance on air - both during the previous week's Network Gold and on the day of transmission. We will transmit Network Gold from 6pm on 1503AM, with football commentary continuing on FM. This situation will occur next on 18th October. Tim Beech Asst Editor BBC Radio Stoke. |

I heard the report as I was travelling to work in the car after 8am. It is really nice to hear details of why people seek asylum here, and how poorly treated they are by the home office. Alison Greatbatch Thanks for the kind things you said, Rubin. I do miss working at Radio Stoke as I had so much fun there and still have many happy memories. It was certainly a big part of my life. I'm now Mrs Alison Bushnell, living in Coventry with a husband and two cats and thankfully, still a kid at heart. I'm hoping to get back into broadcasting again, but sadly, Stoke is a bit too far to travel, so I am looking for something nearer where I'm living now. Thanks for the nice words and love to everyone who remembers me. Ali alison bushnell Coventry

Alison Greatbatch - radio stoke presenter Hi Is there a page on your website with the history of Radio Stoke? If there is, I'd be really grateful if you could guide me to it as I can't find it in my own searches. Chris Mountford

Alison Greatbatch - radio stoke presenter I too miss Alison Greatbatch. She was like a kid in many ways, always wanting never willing, always giving, never receiving. A great star, though. And a great radio voice. I will miss her cheery chat. Rubin Van Heslop Stoke

Radio Stoke I must agree regarding the lack of in-depth interviewa. In the "old"days we had Jason Dean. Maybe he was too much of a rotweiller but nevertheless he had some extremely interesting interviews. Then there was Mark Jones. He was becoming more confident and would not allow those being interviewed to get away without answering the question or avoiding the issue. Then he leaves. Can we please have some indepth discussions? Life is much more interesting with them. Gillian Moreton chesterton

Digital TV We live in Leek and on enquiring into obtaining the Free BBC digital programmes we were informed that we cannot receive them free. Because we are among the 20% where an aerial does not receive these channels, we would have to pay for cable. We pay our television licence fee, so why should we not be receiving BBC digital channels? We are outraged! M Graham
