A North Staffs hot-spot.... from the 1970s | |
| | | Trentham Gardens, 1970s As we enjoy the present hot weather this photo looks back to what people did to cool down in the early 1970s. The heated pool was built in the grounds of Trentham Hall, the former home of the Dukes of Sutherland.
The hall, to the south of Stoke on Trent, was abandoned by the Duke's family as a permanent residence in 1905; and the building was demolished, apart from the west front and stable block. The grounds, including a ballroom, were then opened to the public, and were the destination for many a "wakes weekend". Recently however the site has been re-developed as an exhibition, conference and leisure centre. The pool has now been filled in.

Staffordshire Past Track is a Lottery Funded project showcasing archive photos, artwork, maps, audio and film representing the county's history. The site is expanding all the time and there are already more than six thousand images and over an hour of archive film footage available on the website - www.staffspasttrack.org.uk. If you're interested in getting involved in the project and own photographs that you think would be of interest, or have local knowledge that you would be willing to share.
