Helping the Tsunami campaign...
Agent Blue appeared at the Victoria Hall on Saturday 19th February, along with a whole host of local bands to help raise money for the Tsunami Appeal.
Alfa 9, Shiro, Fifth Action Shelter and Blast Stereos Loud joined the Stoke-punkers to wow a packed crowd at the venue which is known more for its theatre than its rock 'n' roll!

The Red Cross has launched an emergency appeal in response to the widespread flooding which followed and British Red Cross logistics team has flown to Sri Lanka, one of the countries most affected by the huge tidal waves. Please remember the hundreds of thousands of victims of this disaster who have lost everything.

Events that have already happened
TV Fund-raiser Staffordshire-born actress Meera Syal appeared as part of the ComicAid concert on the 26th. See www.comicaid.co.uk
Sale in Stone on the 26th of hand-crafted toys made in Sri Lanka. Ravindra & Lisa Baddevithana ( 01785 813460) who have family in Southern Sri Lanka are also raising money to take to Sri Lanka in a month-long aid project in April.
"Ruff Aid" benefit concert on 19th Februaryat the Victoria Hall, Hanley with Agent Blue, Alfa 9, Shiro, 5th Action Shelter and Blast Stereos Loud.
Theatre donation Actors and theatre staff at the New Vic in Newcastle donated their evening’s wages on 12th Feb. Terry Moore and Gavin Gillham, long standing friends of cast member Nik Howden, have been running a guest house in Sri Lanka for the last year and have been devastated by the tsunami - their determination to get back on their feet and assist others in their area has resulted in the formation of the Hikkaduwa Economic Area Redevelopment Trust (HEART), to which the donation went.
Live Outdoor Music Event on the 12th in Hanley - with The Jackdaws, Planet Sound, Torben Franck, Andy Hall, and Pseudo Japanese.
Football event BBC Radio Stoke was one of a number of local firms and organisations who submitted teams to this tournament held at Holden Lane Sports College on 6th February. See report
5-a-side Tournament Fenton Manor Leisure Centre, in SoT, held a football tournament on 5th Feb.
Charity concert - by the Stafford Concert Band and other local musicians at the Holy Trinity Church, Church Street, Eccleshall on Saturday 5th February.
Meals The LONDON HOUSE Indian Restaurant (Eccleshall) had a set menu for £10 per head donated to the Appeal on SUNDAY 30TH
Folk Night The Rising Sun Folk Entertainment Club in Willington near Burton had a fund-raising night on 27th Jan.
Fun night - with raffles tombola etc at baddeley Green WMC on Friday Jan 28th.
Fete The Lonsdale School, Eccleshall, held a fete on Saturday 29th January to raise funds
Jazz & Blues Concert Young Lichfield-born boogie woogie pianist Emma Johnson organised a Jazz & Blues Concert in aid of the Appeal on Friday January 28th at Lichfield Guildhall.
Choral concert The Congleton Choral Society held a concert on Sat Jan 22nd, at Astbury Church with the Rode Hall Silver Band. Local bus operators Bostocks and Bakers both provided free transport
Concert The Rotary Club of Tunstall presented the Audley Male Voice Choir, with Denise Leigh at Christ Church Tunstall on 21st Jan.
Bric-a-Brac sale organised by Dane Housing and Oxfam on 22 January at Parson Street in Congleton.
Charity Concert at New Life Church, West Street, Congleton - on 22nd Jan - featuring Bidulph Male Voice Choir and young violinist John J. Garner (BBC Young Musician of the year regional finalist)
12 hour Darts Marathon at Weston Coyney Arms, Weston Coyney, SoT, on Saturday 22nd January.
Local football match On Sunday 23 January young footballers from the NACRO Moves project took on the Staffordshire Police football team in a charity match at the Sir Stanley Matthews Sports Centre at Staffordshire University
Collection raises £10,000 Collecting points sited in Hanley Economic Building Society's branches attracted numerous contributions in January from customers and staff, including several substantial sums, Chief Executive David Webster told us. The Society's donation was made to the Disasters Emergency Committee.
Water donation Aquarius Drinks in Cheddleton, N Staffs, is donating all the water they produced on 21st January to the areas affected. They've got other companies to donate the transport & the bottles. Contact Trevor Davies, one of the tanker drivers.
Fancy Dress day on the buses On Friday 15th Jan bus drivers working for First in the north Staffs and south Cheshire area wore fancy dress to work and collected from passengers on behalf of the disaster relief fund. On the day the collection amounted to £800 and is expected to reach £1000.00. First has also donated corporately to the fund with £65,000 representing £1 per head for each employee in the UK and North America.

Restaurants Both Peaches in Newcastle and The Fortune Rendez-Vous in Hanley held fund raising Evenings with special menus on 10th January.
Panto Cinderella - at 3pm at Belverdere Park Club, Burton on 9th Jan. Proceeds to Tsunami Appeal
donation The Stoke City Supporters Club organised a coach to the FA Cup game at Highbury on 9th Jan and all of the profits from this (including fares, the sale of refreshments, football competitions etc.) were to be donated.
Collection Members of the ATC 1st Stoke on Trent Squadron were in the Potteries Shopping Centre for the Tsunami appeal on Saturday 8th January.
Charity concert The choirs of St Peter's Collegiate Church Wolverhampton and Junction 10 Orchestra performed an emergency charity concert on Saturday night January 8th in St John's Church Wolverhampton.
xmas lights Graham and Margaret Talbot from Cannock extended their home's christmas lights extravaganza to January 6th - to raise money for victims of the quake. To see Mr & Mrs Talbot's lights - click here
prayer and contemplation Wheelock Methodist Church near Sandbach on Wednesday 5th January - with coffee
Bring and Buy Sales Audley Rotary co-ordinated two local Bring and Buy Sales on Monday 3rd January in St James Church Hall AND in Halmerend Methodist Church Hall.
collection In Alsager, four local charities - the Lions, Round Table, 41 Club and Rotary - joined together to have a street by street collection in the town on Sunday, 2nd January.
COFFEE MORNING At Cheadle Methodist on Saturday, 8TH JANUARY 2005 with various stalls. Donations received, all proceeds will go to the appeal.
Silence Churches in the the Diocese of Lichfield (which covers nearly all of Staffordshire) are continuing to provide space for people to reflect on the ongoing catastrophe around the Indian Ocean; and many opened to enable people to observe the midday three minutes silence in a church-context on Wed 5th
Prayer The Bishop of Lichfield called for Sunday 2nd January to be a day of prayer and generous giving for those suffering because of the earthquake and tsunami in the Indian Ocean. |

Staffordshire based charity The Anglo Thai Foundation (ATF) - set up to pay for the education of children in Thailand - is also launching an emergency appeal. Jean and Wilson Young who help run the charity from their home in Waterhouses near Leek, are going to use the next trip to take out as much aid as they possibly can.

Stafford Buddhists help Tsunami Disaster Fund in Sri Lanka
With the help of Jethavana Buddhist Vihara, Birmingham, a number of people in Stafford and Stoke are collecting money, clothes food etc to be sent to Sri Lanka.
Truck loads were sent on 29th December, 5th Jan, 16 Jan. The priority is on Money, food and Medicine now.
Cloths, bedding linen etc is not required. Asda Stafford has helped by keeping a collection box.

Amphibious vehicles come in handy
Wavecar, a firm in Alrewas, Staffordshire, which makes specialist vehicles has donated amphibious vehicles to the relief effort in Sri Lanka.
The three strong management-team of Adrian Hockely, Mike Brown and his brother Steve spent fourteen days helping to carry supplies across a river in Sri Lanka. The bridge was swept away during the tsunami leaving a village cut in two.
The team also trained six drivers to operate the wavecar and have left them out there for six months.
Mike's company has 600 of the all-terrain vehicles - and he and his colleagues felt they wouldn't miss a couple of them for 6 months or so... and the firm has been getting requests for help from charities working in other badly affected areas. Who knows where the Hagglunds may end up next? |
Oxfam appeal
At the Newcastle, Staffordshire shop, volunteers were being forced to open on public holidays because of public demand - but say they're not sure they'll be able to open every day in future unless new volunteers come forward to help.
Over the whole nation, ten thousand volunteers are needed immediately.

Fire Stations
Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service has an appeal for the Asia Tsunami Fund.
All Staffordshire Fire Stations will be proactive in raising funds and donations may be taken to your local Fire Station where they will be collected and paid into the account.
Burton on Trent Fire Station personnel on the first day of the appeal collected over £1,300 to start off the fund.
The appeal is beign run by Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service for the Staffordshire Emergency Services Humanitarian Association, (SESHAA) a Fire & Rescue service Charity, who has been providing aid and assistance worldwide since 1995. Assistant Divisional Officer Alf Wilson |
rugby ladies
I am a player for Newcastle Ladies Rugby Team. We have recently produced a team calendar featuring photos of our female players in various cheeky poses.
Initially we produced the calendar to raise much needed funds for our facilities upgrade - we need new changing facilities and pitch improvements.
However in the light of the recent Tsunami disaster in Indonesia we have decided to donate part of our profits to the Tsunami appeal fund.
Our calendars cost £5 each and we will be donating £1 from the sale of each one to the Tsunami fund. Calendars can be purchased at the club shop at Lilleshall Road, Clayton or from the club bar when the shop is not open.

Books of Condolence
Books of Condolence are at six locations across Congleton Borough.
Collection points and Books of Condolence will be available at Congleton Town Hall, Westfields, Alsager Information Centre, Holmes Chapel One Stop Shop and Victoria Buildings in Middlewich, and all cash collected will be forwarded to the Disaster Earthquake Committee.
A Book of Condolence will also be available at Sandbach Library.

hotel effort
Guests and staff at the Moat House Hotel in Acton Trussel near Stafford together raised over £2000 for the Asia aid relief appeal.
Guests at the New Years Eve dinner dance and and members of staff were asked to dig deep to raise money for the victims of the natural disaster which had taken place a week earlier. The hotel now plans to introduce an optional donation to its express-lunchtime menus and then match every donation received. |

Support WeekendChurches Together in Haslington, Winterley and Crewe Green held a weekend of support from from Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd for all affected by the Tsunami disaster in Asia.
Tsunami Victims Remembered
Lichfield Cathedral kept Monday 31 January as a day of prayer and reflection following the tsunami in the Indian Ocean.
At 7.30pm the Lichfield Cathedral Chamber Choir sang Fauré s Requiem.
The day concluded with the Cathedral bells ringing half muffled from 8.15 until 9.30pm. |
| Hear Church Service
A special service to remember the victims of the disaster held on Friday 7th Jan at St Peter Ad Vincula church in Stoke and attended by civic leaders, including the Lord Mayor of Stoke on Trent Karamat Ali. The service was led by Prebendary David Lingwood and other church leaders and the sermon was given by the Bishop of Shrewsbury the Right Reverend Alan Smith.
