Tsunami Aid Football Tournament
Tsunami Aid Football Tournament
Back of the net!

BBC Radio Stoke FC went into the Tsunami Tournament as prepared as they would ever be...

They'd been on special diets
, trained hard and even found time to relax over the weekend!

So how did they get on?

We arrived at the Vida complex, eagerly awaiting our draw and the impending fixtures!

Lo and behold, we were paired with lads from a local gym, Wedgwood, and our old rivals from Etruria - The Sentinel!

Manager Graham McGarry gave us a final team talk, read out the final team selection, and we were on our way!

Raising money!
The tournament was a big success, and just from team registrations alone a sum of around £1000 was raised!

The Radio Stoke team managed to squeeze a lot of cash out of their poor colleagues, who were frogmarched to the sponsorship form and forced to pledge their dosh to the cause!

In all seriousness though, all were keen to help and we raised £200 for the appeal.

Opening game...
To kick-off, we faced the lads from Bodyworks, who were pretty confident about beating us when they were asked!

The figures of ten, five and three-nil were bandied about, but we quickly proved we were no soft touch by racing into a two-goal lead.

We then made a couple of subs to shake things up, and although the lads played well, our opponents were just too strong, running out 4-2 winners.

Derby-day

After a short break to replenish lost fluids, we were back into action against our rivals The Sentinel.

We'd lost a recent Thursday night fixture 2-0, so we were eager to redress the balance against the press pack!

And didn't we just? We were on the front foot from the off, playing some excellent football and fighting for every ball.

With the scores at 1-1 after a closely-fought opening five minutes, Radio Stoke FC hit their stride, and four more goals to seal a satisfying 5-1 win.

Two down, one to go...
Wedgwood were our third, and final opponents, and by now, they like us, were beginning to show their fatigue!

This led to a scrappy game, and some fantastic goalkeeping from both sides as shots rained in on goal.

In the event, an unfortunate penalty decision and a second goal put paid to our hopes of reaching the next round, although Ade McGarry did grab us a consolation.

Great fun...

The atmosphere at the tournament was one of good fun and sportsmanship.

Games ended with a shake of the hands, and a laugh - and inevitably, with Radio Stoke FC, we all hit the bar for a well-deserved pint!
