40 years of British/US ska - part one!
Lars Fredriksen of Rancid
Lars Fredriksen of Rancid

40 years ago a fresh sound exploded out of the Caribbean when Prince Buster appeared on British TV for the first time.. it then spread around the UK music scene and is still fervently loved today.
Ska was born.
What's more, ska lives on, now drawing inspiration from the snappy sound of punk/new-wave.

Following in the footsteps of the original ska invasion in the 1960s are now bands on both sides of the Atlantic with a penchant for the 'Two-Tone' revival sound.

Millencolin
Millencolin - ska for the 21st century
Ska in the USA
In the USA, punk bands like Rancid and NOFX borrow heavily from the sound, adding the choppy, speedy guitar to the pounding drums
.

Some bands, like the Voodoo Glow Skulls, MU330 and Millencolin take things even further with whole horn sections blasting out amongst hardcore punk guitar.

Then that's not 'proper' ska?
Ah, well you're right there.

And the music buffs who just have to categorise everything have decided to fuse the names together (just like the sound) and they call it 'Ska-punk'.

Some take it even further and call the harder, punkier bands 'Ska-core', but all of it, however far removed, is influenced by ska.

Traditional...

For the most 'authentic' of the US bands, you need to get hold of someone like The Slackers or The Pietasters.

Their relaxed brand of ska harks back to the smoother, rootsier Jamaican style which appeared in the late sixties and early seventies.

Back in the UK

Spurred on by the success of ska-punk in the US, bands like Spunge have copied the formula and brought the hybrid to our shores.

Most UK bands are predominantly based on the 'trad-ska' format, and so Hammond organs, light, trebly guitars and bustling brass are unleashed instead of hacking, distorted guitars and bawled vocals.

Stoke's place in the scene

Ska in Stoke is growing and this is thanks to the dedication and hard work of bands like the Rough Kutz and The Skalinskis.

The Rough Kutz

Local heroes!
The Rough Kutz
adopt an authentic 60s skinhead approach reminiscent of Bad Manners; and the band are all big Port Vale fans!
We reviewed their 25th- anniversary-of-2Tone gig - is ska the voice of the masses? : Click here to check the review...

Russian-tinged ska?!
It's true... The Skalinskis are a ska band with a difference. They play upbeat ska with a Russian-tinge, so expect a bit of cossack dancing in with your 'skankin'!
See more about them on our Band A-Z

More and more ska nights are cropping up in the area, with venues like The Talbot in Stoke
offering regular events devoted to the phenomenon that is Ska.

SKA is the best. Can't say i'm too keen on the USA SKA bands, although The Toasters aint too bad.On the British SKA scene though, i can't believe no one has mentioned The Hotknives or Mark Foggo's Skasters.

TheBrainSlug
Poms saying American Ska is not real Ska is a laugh. After all Madness aren't exactly the Skatalites are they (then again The Stones weren't exactly Fred McDowell or Howlin Wolf for all that they wanted to be). Listen to some Don Drummond and find out what it's all about. Unlike Madness, the specials, et al, the Jamacan ska musicians could generally actually play their instruments! eg. both Ernest Ranglin and the aforementioned (and sadly missed) Drummond were among the best at their respective instruments in any genre of music worldwide. BTW "Message To You Rudi" is a Danny Livingstone song, not a Specials song.

helen

Shaun of the Deads ska is The Specials - Ghost Town. Support the uk ska, lightyear, howards alias, capdown. Brass rules

Murray
Listen to Jam Sesh Rejects if you like proper ska/punk ;)

caitriona
Pama International keep it real and how they have just got better and better since their Loafers (which was raw and superb) and Skooby days. I think they have the right aproach to reach a wider audience without compromising their beliefs.

Sam
Y'all need to check out the Aggrolites. Awesome authentic studio one reggae out of CA.

Chris
The Dualers are the uk leading contender to " Go Big " Check out " The Melting Pot "

Rob
For a great ska radio show from Canada, listen to Ska on the X, every wednesday night at 7 pm Pacific Time (GMT+8?)www.thex.ca

wayne
the two tone movement left me SKA`D for life don`t call me ska face

Skafunkel
i love ska/punk, but in the uk section you need capdown, farse and the jam sesh rejects etc, and there are better american examples like leftover crack or big d and the kids table. plus chester is the ska capital of the uk, keep on skankin'

nige
american ska wther its punk bands doing it or pop punk its just not the same sound. Id suggest that type of ska the type Reel Big Fish play is more influenced by Calypso than jamacian reggae.

jett rink
i hear roddy byers ex-specials combine,s rock,a,billy and ska in his new band "the skabilly rebel,s"!!

Rob Burns
And let's not forget that Ska made its way to Australia with Bands like Strange Tenants, Allniters, No Nonsense, Funaddicts and more recently the Porkers, Area 7, Dr. Octopus and a host of others. Australian Ska has its own sound that is true to its roots with strong 2Tone influences. The Ska scene is still strong down under. Keep Skankin'

OWEEN FREDERICKSON STUARDO
FROM CHILE: WAKE THE DA TOWN & TELL DA PEOPLE CAUSE CAME DA TOWN OWEEN FREDERICKSON!!!!! I'M A SINGER OF SKA MUSIC WITH MY ORCHESTRA LOS ALAKRANES DEL RITMO WE HAD PRESERVED DA OLD RIDIM. MY OPINIOS ABOUT SKA MUSIC IS JUST DANCE & HAVE FUN & DANCE UNTIL DA MORNING COMES FEELING & DOIN DA HARD TIMES IN A NEW SENSATION CALLED SKA... RIGHT ON TIME YALLL

JAK
those American ska examples are pretty bad. I mean, NOFX and Millencolin just have fast guitars, and are in no way ska. Rancid, while they are technically ska, aren't real ska. they need to mention bands like Catch 22, streetlight manifesto, reel big fish, and even more local ones to the East coast like Arrogant Sons of bitches, since that is really where ska is biggest in the USA.

yank
yeah, terrible examples of American ska, I mean come on. Rancid??? Nobody in America considers them ska. Some better examples of American ska are Eastern Standard Time, Reel Big Fish, and Mad Caddies sort of have that Russian-ish thing you were talking about. Way to make British ska seem better. And PS, Catch 22 aint the best thing ever.

stigs
In response to Adam Millencolin have a whole album of B sides out witch most of the stuff is ska, they even do a cover of Desmond Dekkers Israelites

Mrs Jingles
I think you should try listening to The Dualers - they are a ska band and are absolutely fantastic. TO get more info log onto their website www.thedualers.com

If you want to hear some truelly trafditional style Ska music from the UK then the only band to hear at the moment are a band called no1station. I think that there a London based band but they tend to pop up all over the place. There web site tells you more than i can write but all i know is that they have worked with some great people like... prince buster, laural aitken, Dennis Al Capone, Winston Francise and are generally pushing the music forward. Check them out. I'm Hooked.

SockPuppeteer

Remember Ska Music-Skinhead Music

Sco
Ska is good in ALL forms, weather it be trad ska, 2 tone or third wave. When people complain about some ska bands being to 'popish' (or any good bands really) i am discusted at this, I'd much rather hear a pop-ska song than the crap we have in the charts! Ska bands i've seen live - Spunge (twice), the toasters, fandangle, lukes whisk and Whitmore. Also i've seen Skaface (a tribute to madness and the specials. You cant beat a good Ska gig- all that skanking - endless fun until after the gig when u cant feel your legs :D

sockmonster..hull
i love ska..and..punk..and jazz..and jaffa cakes..and boobs..yeah so er bye

Adam
Hey! I Love Ska, and all types of music, and i'd like to make the comment that Millencollin are not ska, fast guitars they do have but they are a popish punk band! Pick it up! Pick it up! Pick it up!

Yvonne
I was really into ska in the early 80's, but what I'd like to know is how much did early U.B 40 fit in with the ska music. Would you call their music ska or were they more reggae?

Alex
I went to the london international ska fest on saturday and saw the toasters and i've also seen the mad caddies!

Martin
Too many bands are becoming mainstream and giving "Ska" the wrong name. For instance No Doubt used to be really into the whole reggae roots thing and now look at Gwen Stefani.Similary Spunge have taken Ska and turned it into a horrible hybrid of whiny punk and pathetic upstrokes. On the other hand Ska-Punk can produce some fenominal bands such as Capdown and Big D and the Kids table who haven't commercialised for the masses and will they will continue to fight against commercialism.

Tom Nolan
Check out an up and coming band The Dualers from the South East/London area. Great voices, and a kicking brass section original style

i think that ska music was brilliant. At school their was alot of name calling and when ska turned up we all began to unite, black and white together. It was the best decade that i had ever known and the music, still sounds good now. The band that rock our world as young teens were, The specials,The beat, selector,Madness, and bad manners. I also thought that The body snatchers were brill too, but the men seem to dominate it, and didnt give us rude girls a chance. What i didnt understand was the skinheads, how they loved ska but hated blacks, i couldnt weigh it up. Something must have sparked it up. I mean, who ever heard of men hating blacks and dancing to their music. As a young child they were intimidating, and scared me. I am with an ex skinhead, and he said that "it was something he got into when he was a youngster and followed everyone else, but he said their were black skinheads too". I also heard that there was the national front at a madness concert too, im glad i didnt go because it would have been quite frightening i think. I think that happend because madness had no blacks in the band. But my family grew up listening to madness cos the music was brill. Asians liked them too. Anyway thanks for listening, and all i can say is bring back ska. it awesome.

tom
ska rocks.

christine
