Hednesford

Hednesford is known for that curious bowl in the earth near to it - now taken up by the noise, thrills and spills of Hednesford Raceway. But it's also got Cannock Chase on its patch.

Funky Facts about Hednesford

In recent years the success of the local football club has put the town on the map. Little Hednesford Town has been enjoying its own little bit of Cup fever, having won the FA Trophy at Villa Park.

Hednesford was an important coal mining community for over a century.

The Museum of Cannock Chase is actually here in Hednesford. The Museum occupies the former Valley Colliery corn store, where the pit ponies' feed was kept. It has permanent displays about the local coal industry.

The oldest sections of the town surround the hilltop areas of the existing town. However, the lower part of the town became the focal point as the community grew with the mining industry.

The military have had a significant presence on nearby Cannock Chase Country Park.
Between 1914 and 1918 two huge army training camps were built in the area and over a quarter of a million British and Commonwealth troops passed through destined for the Western Front.
In 1938 a Royal Air Force training camp was established to train technicians in maintenance and repair of airframes and engines. No. 6 School of Technical training became better known as RAF Hednesford.

The camp was later used for resettlement of Hungarian refugees fleeing from the Russian invasion of Budapest, in 1956.

Commuter
Hednesford is a historic mining town that plays second fiddle to near neighbour Cannock with council spending. There is a great town centre spirit & with the planned retransformation of the heart of the town centre shopping will improve.
Schools are on the up in Hednesford especially in primary ed. St Josephs RC & Gorsemoor & Five Ways are terrific. Kingsmead for High School ed will improve with each year now they have a 6th form facility.
I love Hednesford and the surrounding area.

Hednesford itself is not much to look at but it is a great starting point to Cannock Chase. The area is steeped in local history and beautiful walks. The ww1 military history of the chase is very important with trenches, rifle ranges and lots of other features that over 90 years after the war can still be located.

Timmy wing-it loves his footy, which he says is 'always a barrel of laughs'.

Gaza commuter
Hednesford is possibly the furthest north of Birmingham that I would consider commuting from. A historic mining town that plays second fiddle to near neighbour Cannock with council spending, however it is on the edge of Cannock Chase Forest & ideally placed for commuting everywhere. There is a great town centre spirit & with the planned retransformation of the heart of the town centre shopping will improve. Housing is good in Hednesford & affordable compared to the rest of the UK, choice in property is freely available. Schools are on the up in Hednesford especially in primary ed. St Josephs RC & Gorsemoor & Five Ways are terrific. Kingsmead for High School ed will improve with each year now they have a 6th form facility. No cable facility in Hednesford, so broadband is via the BT exchange, but connections are strong & reliable to the internet.Great outdoor pursuits on the Chase with mountain biking walks, sightseeing & good local parks. I love Hednesford and the surrounding area.
