Eccleshall Village

Eccleshall is a village in Staffordshire, located seven miles north west of Stafford, and six miles west of Stone. The A519 runs through the town.

Funky Facts about Eccleshall

You may not have heard of Charlotte Sophia Burne, but you would have, if you had read her 'Shropshire Folk Lore' book. She spent the end of her life in Eccleshall.

And.... Eccleshall Castle is not a castle. The Bishop of Lichfield had his palace (Eccleshall Castle) here. Later, the 'Castle' suffered damage during the English Civil War.

The Holy Trinity Church dates from 1195, and is large and ornate with bishops' tombs.

The town itself was a relatively important market town by the time of the Wars of the Roses, when the castle was a fleeting residence for the Queen - Margaret of Anjou.

Eccleshall has seven pubs, including one brewery (which has recently moved about 6 miles away to expand), and nine other places to eat, ranging from pub food to high quality Indian food. This is quite unusual for such a small town, and is a reflection of its historical dominance in West Staffordshire, and its location on the main A519.

Lez thinks they should do away with tradition and rip up those cobbles, to combat congestion in the town.

According to Jacqui (see review below) the best place in Eccleshall is the Bell Inn but Matt Eyre reckons any 1 of the towns 8 pubs is worth a visit or perhaps a trip on the miniature railway is more your thing!

Eccleshall, We love it, my husband is of eccy folk and has seen some changes, especially the people who have moved into the town he says (yes TOWN).
The best thing is the History of the old Market Town and the pubs which all have a storey to tell from days gone by.
But why is it that only the Indian restaurants seem to be able to get the eating out business correct? The pubs are don’t seem to want the business any more and there is nowhere to eat good English food at present and that’s a shame.
There are also too many snobs that look down on other people or totally ignore other people who they think are beneath them.
The country side around Eccleshall is some of the best in the country. We Still Love it

Eccleshall is a great centre for discovering the local countryside. Whether walking or cycling, there are many excellent views. A mixture of quiet country roads, bridleways and footpaths provides access to some beautiful countryside.
My particular favourite is from the Star Inn at Copmere opposite the pool heading west past Walk Mill to Bishops Offley, then north down 'The Rock', a short stretch of road which is not for the faint hearted! Continue to the end of this road then turn left (west) to the village of Fairoak. Turning left here and heading south along Langot Lane takes in some of the best scenery in the area, with Bishops Wood and the source of the river Sow in view. In the small village of Outlands, take a left and continue along this unusual road with a stream flowing alongside most of its length, until it brings you out at Walk Mill. From here, a short distance to the right is the road you first took to Bishops Offley which takes you back to Copmere. At just under 8 miles, it is suitable for cycling or for the fitter walking enthusiast.
