Church Eaton

Church Eaton (near Stafford) may be a small village, but it has a scarecrow festival, and a famous witch!

Funky Facts about Church Eaton

It used to have one of the smallest theatres in the country - at the Royal Oak pub, where they held an annual Comedy Festival.

Also, Joan Eaton the witch was burned at the stake at a junction of lanes, just south-east of the village (it is still marked by a small triangular patch of grass).

The village church dedicated to Saint Editha largely dates from the 12th century. St Editha was a local Anglo-Saxon princess.

Does any one know when Joan Eaton was burned at the stake? Why?

The pub no longer has a theatre but we do have a funky 'scarecrow' festival each year. Visit our website to find out more information. The festival included Worm charming, a tug of war competition, the normal scarecrow trail, a traditional village fayre, medieval martial arts, a barn dance, shared supper, church events, market and live music throughout the weekend. The festival committee works hard to put on the event which is very well attended. We raise money for all local charities and organisations. The whole village participates and a good time is had by all!

JD says: "....The church of St. Editha stands on the probable site of a prehistoric Anglo-Saxon fort; and one mile SW of the village, over the canal, is the still-standing structure known as St. Editha’s Well...."
