Burntwood

A colliery town on the Cannock coalfields, dating back only to the Middle Ages. It was created by burning the forest which covered the area...hence its name - 'Burnt-wood!'

Strange Facts about Burntwood...

In 1736 Samuel Johnson opened the most disastrous school in Britain. It had only three pupils and closed the following year. However one of the students, David Garrick left Burntwood for London and became one of this country's most famous actors.

Thanks to Paul James for informing us about the town's very own heritage railway. The Chasewater Railway runs on old tracks around the Chasewater itself, just outside the town proper, and still carries families and day-trippers out for fun.

Lightning from the Gladiators went to Chasetown High....

Worst thing about Burntwood?
The complete lack of facilities; if you want to shop, you have to go out of town. If you want to watch a film, you have to go out of town. If you want to see live music, you have to go out of town. Considering the size of the population, the situation is disgusting.

Best Place in Burntwood?
Castle Ring - there is no higher point due east of Castle Ring until you get to Russia

On the page for Burntwood, people say the most famous thing about the place is that it has the smallest park in Europe. This is not strictly correct - it's not a park, it's a village green and yes, it is the smallest, but only in the UK.
It is next to the most beautiful church in the UK as well - Christchurch. Well worth a look.
Burntwood does have a lack of shops and infrastructure, as nearby Lichfield grabs all the local council money while we are left with nothing - e.g. Christmas: Lichfield looks like Blackpool Illuminations, while all Burntwood gets is a solitary tree with a few ancient lights flung over it. We pay the same taxes as Lichfield - equal rights for Burntwood!
