It was created by burning the forest which covered the area...hence its name - 'Burnt-wood!' Strange Facts about Burntwood...In 1736 Samuel Johnson opened the most disastrous school in Britain. It had only three pupils and closed the following year. However one of the students, David Garrick left Burntwood for London and became one of this country's most famous actors. Thanks to Paul James for informing us about the town's very own heritage railway. The Chasewater Railway runs on old tracks around the Chasewater itself, just outside the town proper, and still carries families and day-trippers out for fun.
