At the foot of Mount Sinai, the imposing walls of St. Katherine's Monastery is home to one of the world's oldest churches and what Egyptians believe to be the Burning Bush where God spoke to Moses. | "It's too beautiful to describe, it's absolutley stunning." | | Lamont Howie |
The monastery's walls are built high to protect it from the harsh weather and elements. Outside the chapel it's unbearably hot and busy with tourists, camels and tradesmen, but inside the chapel it's tranquil, cool and incredibly beautiful. Twenty incense burners hang from the ceiling, surrounding the building with the smell. The ceiling is painted in gold stars, gold leaf is everywhere with five Egyptian style pillars running the length of the room, and a painting of Christ on the Cross above it all. Hear Lamont's descriptive tour of the historic chapel. Lamont also climbed Mount Sinai in time to watch the sunrise - read the feature. *These stories will be broadcast on BBC Radio Stoke Sunday Breakfast on 10/09/06 |
